- Biography / History
- Howard McCully (1923-1944) of St. Louis, Missouri, was born to Grover F. McCully (1891-1967) and Bertha M. Jonte McCully (1889-1961). Howard had three siblings; Frank (1915-1981), Harold (1916-197), and Pearl (1919-1997). According to Howard's application for headstone and draft card, he was a Private in 26th Infantry and died fighting in World War II.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Howard McCully papers (dated 1933, 1943, undated; 0.26 cubic feet; 6 folders, 2 photographs) comprises the travel papers and diary belonging to Howard McCully, a young man from St. Louis, Missouri as he tours Europe with the Young Men's Christian Association in the early twentieth century. Howard McCully and several other young men traveled to Europe in the summer of 1933 and visited the following countries; France, Switzerland, Germany and England. The group sailed on the S.S. Deutschland from New York city on July 6th, 1933 and arrived in France on July 13th, 1933. Howard kept a diary of his days onboard the ship and every day of their tour of the different countries. The diary features details on the meals, activities, tourist sites and souvenirs. Also included in this collection are the letters sent to Howard from his mother, Bertha McCully, and his girlfriend "Coop". The letters discuss travel tips, request for letters and declarations of love from Coop. This collection also features multiple papers, magazines, programs, business cards and maps from the trip. A business card from The Sphinx American Bar, or brothel, in France and a program from Haus Vaterland in Germany are two of the highlights due to both of the buildings no longer existing today.
- The Howard McCully papers collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
