Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Lexington & Ohio Railroad Company was incorporated at a meeting of the commissioners appointed by an act of the Kentucky Legislature in Lexington on January 30, 1830. Those in attendance were Elisha Winter, James Weir, Elisha Warfield, George Boswell, Benjamin Gratz, Michael Fisher, Luther Stephens, David Megowan, John W. Hunt, Thomas E. Boswell, John Brand, and Richard Higgins. The intention was to connect Lexington with a commercial railroad to the other two larger cities in Kentucky, Frankfort and Louisville, in order to transport goods and facilitate travel. In August 1832, the railroad had completed its first mile and a half of track leaving Lexington and traveling at 10 miles per hour. By June 1833, the line extended 15 miles outside of Lexington and the town of Middleway, later known as Midway, was established because it was halfway between Lexington and Frankfort.
- The Lexington & Ohio Railroad Company experienced financial setbacks related to the cholera epidemic of 1833, the expense of laying and repairing limestone sills and imported iron rails, as well as the difficult, hilly terrain outside Frankfort. They were able to construct a finished line from Lexington to Frankfort in 1835, with an incline plane to navigate the difficult terrain into Frankfort. The Lexington & Ohio Railroad continued to have financial problems that resulted in leasing the line to Phillip Swigert & Company in 1838, and it was later sold at public auction to the Commonwealth of Kentucky in 1842.
