Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- No biographical information available on Frances C. Holton. Author of the majority of letters in this collection is Joseph Stanton. Joseph Stanton (1806-1903) emigrated from Ontario, Canada to the United States and was married to Sarah A. Stanton (1832-1922). They had one biological child together, Mary Elizabeth Stanton. The couple did care for a possible adopted child named Charles M. Stanton (1865-1951). The Stanton family lived in Schoolcraft, Missouri and moved to Bennington, Kansas in the 1870s.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Frances C. Holton letters (dated 1868-1879, undated; 0.08 cubic feet; 7 folders) comprise letters sent to Frances C. Holton during the 1870s from friends and her brother that discuss daily activities, crops, and the raising of a young child named Charlie Stanton. The majority of the collection comprises letters sent from Joseph Stanton to Frances. Joseph wrote to her about his crops, livestock, sending money and updates on a young boy named Charlie. The letters allude that Charlie was sent to live with the Stantons for an unknown reason. The collection also includes one letter from a friend living in Albany, New York and one letter from Frances' brother, M.V. Kitts in Watertown, New York.
- The Frances C. Holton letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letter, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
