Hollywood-style Homecoming hits campus

By Adam Span
CONTRIBUTING WRITER

If you happen to catch a
glimpse of Madonna. James
Dean or the The Men In Black
riding down Woodland Avenue
on a 55-foot-long float this Fri-
day evening. you haven't lost
your mind.

You will just be witnessing
this year's homecoming parade.

Several UK social fraterni-
ties and sororities have teamed
up once again to build floats for
this year's homecoming. The
Greeks incorporated the "Holly-

wood Nights“ theme while they
made decorations for the floats.
Everything from colored glitter
to chicken wire was being used
as students were making stars
and movie reels to help show off
the homecoming theme.

So how in the world do
make a float?

“You start with a trailer.
build a back on it and decorate
the sides." said Josh Harden.
vice president of Kappa Alpha.

Kappa Alpha teamed up
with Chi Omega to build their
Hollywood float.

“They thought we were my

about ready to pass out."

“They made the theme Hol-

tie it in with I'K football."

Fellow Kappa Alpha mem-
ber Chris Slone has been build-
ing floats for a couple of years
now. and said it's a great way
for different fraternities and
sororities to meet each other.

"It gives new people in the

Kappa Alpha member Scott
Yowell said the activities like
building floats can also help out
a fraternity's image
“Sometimes fraternities get
a bad name; this shows that we
don't just drink." Yowell said.
After all of the hard work is
finished. the people who spent
hours working on the floats
share a sense of accomplishment.

Reducing

UK's recycling bins may be
in jeopardy if people don't
start using them correctly

ayitouy lam

Fosmwtmc mm

UK students are making use of UK's re-
cycling program. which was implemented
this year.

Unfortunately, their efforts are often
wasted.

Non-recyclable items are being found
in the bins. said recycling coordinator Tom
Gregory.

“Students are putting things like candy
wrappers and gum in recycling bins. which
makes it impossible for us to recycle any-
thing else in the bin because we just don‘t
have the time to sort through everything,“
Gregory said.

At the beginning of the semester. re-
cycling bins were distributed in the
north and south halls on each floor of the
White Hall Classroom Building. Since
then. Gregory is not sure the bins will
stay there.

“We put recycling bins in the class-
room building because we heard from
everybody that they wanted them," he said.
“but if people don’t use them correctly we
will have to take them out. which would be
a shame."

Bins were added to the vending area of
the Carol Martin Gatton College of Busi-
ness and Economics Building. and the
vending area of the Student Center.

What do others around UK think about
recycling and the program at UK'.’

“Recycling is a bad idea." said philos-
ophy sophomore Wayne Lindmark. “We
have the technology to move forward. so
let’s use it. Stop cutting down the forest
and grow hemp. I would bet heavily that
growing hemp would be more cost effec~
tive than growing trees and recycling that
paper.

“Recycling plastics is a waste of fossil
fuels. it is eventually going to run out."
Lindmark said. “Create a better product.“

Some students feel strongly about

“recycling is important because the pop-
ulation is increasing more and more.
Therefore. we are using more and more.
If we don‘t recycle. we will run out of

Acceptable for the bins include: com-

Some UK students are cele-
brating homecoming in a differ-
ent way this year.

In addition to cheering on
the Cats. the UK ROTC will run
from town to town in remem-
brance of the prisoners of war
and missing in action. The
ROTC has sponsored this event
for about 10 years.

“These are the men and
women of our armed services
who fought for many of the free
doms we have today. without
concern for their personal safe-
ty." said communications sopho
more Ashley Pagan. “It is hard
to imagine some of the hard-
ships and atrocities many of the
POWs had to endure while in
Vietnam. and it is equally dis-
turbing that in 1998 there are
still those listed as MIA."

The ROTC will hold their
annual run from Barker Hall to
Frankfort this Saturday. The
run begins at 8 am. and several

“We will hopefully have
around 30 participants” for the
run. said Anna Hilb. an archi-

who is commander of the
Arnold Air Society.
Senior Cadet Lt. Brad

Chaney doesn’t think running
29 miles is too much to ask.

“We feel this run to Hank-
fort isn't a big deal to remem-
ber those men and women who
are currently missing in action
or have given their lives for our
country." Chaney said.

The participants of this run
don‘t have to be just ROTC
cadets. Anyone is encouraged
