Collection Overview

Biography / History
Abby Lindsey Marlatt was a professor of home economics at the University of Kentucky and a human rights and social justice activist. Marlatt was born on December 5, 1916, in Manhattan, Kansas. Her parents were Frederick and Annie Marlatt. Her grandfather, Washington Marlatt, was instrumental in establishing Bluemont College which became Kansas State University in Manhattan. Her aunt, Abby Lillian Marlatt, for whom she was named, was the first director of the Home Economics Department at the University of Wisconsin. Marlatt obtained her bachelor's degree from Kansas State College in 1939 and earned her Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in nutrition and food science in 1947. She was hired onto the faculty in Foods and Nutrition at Kansas State University in 1945 and worked there, getting tenure, until 1956, when she was hired in 1956 to be the inaugural director of the University of Kentucky's School of Home Economics in the College of Agriculture in Lexington, Kentucky.
While a student and faculty member at Kansas State, the University of California, and at the University of Kentucky, Marlatt was involved in progressive, civil rights, and anti-war and pacifist organizations and causes, especially during the 1950s and 1960s in actions to desegregate restaurants and movie theatres. She was involved in founding the Lexington chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE). She was also actively anti-war and protested the Vietnam War draft. In 1963, she was removed from her position as Director of the School of Home Economics because of her war protests. However, since she was a tenured faculty member, she remained employed at the University, retiring in 1985. That year, she was awarded the University of Kentucky's Sullivan Medallion for service to the community.
In the 1970s through the 2000s, Marlatt was also an active volunteer in a variety of other Lexington, Kentucky, organizations and causes, including anti-poverty programs, education and health programs for seniors and youth, open housing, the Unitarian Church, and folk music. In 2001, Marlatt was inducted into the Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame.
Marlatt's long-time partner was Norma Perry. Marlatt died in Lexington, Kentucky, on March 3, 2010.

Contents of the Collection

Organizations (box 2012ua050-O1 to 2012ua050-O28), 1945-2007, undated

Scope and Contents

Comprises primarily board meeting minutes and other administrative and financial board-level records of various non-profit and government organizations in Lexington-Fayette County and Kentucky on which Marlatt served, 1947-2007. These organizations advocated for and operated actions and programs around civil rights and desegregation, non-violence, senior citizens, and youth. The civil rights organizations include the Lexington chapter of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE, 1947-1981), the Lexington Open Housing Commission (1965-1985), Community Action Council (CAC, originally called Community Action Lexington-Fayette (CALF), 1971-2007), and Micro-City Government (1967-2007). Senior citizen organizations include Bluegrass Community Services (1984-2003), the Emerson Center (1995-2005), and the Special Advisory Commission of Senior Citizens (1992-2006). Smaller amounts of records from additional human rights, civil rights, non-violence and peace, seniors, womens, and arts organizations are in the miscellaneous category.

The series also includes records for organizations of which Marlatt was an active member, including the American Association of University Women (1940s-1992), the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government Ethics Commission (LFUGG, 1995-2000), the United Nations Blugrass Chapter (1980-2003), and the Unitarian Universalist Church of Lexington (1945-2008).

Scope and Contents

Although Marlatt was active in the AAUW, her name does not appear in the majority of the files. Marlatt appears to have collected the papers in a "historian" capacity. Box O4 includes AAUW pennants and a tote bag, brochures from the 1940s (earliest papers in this group), "Wrapped Up in Kentucky" wrapping paper, and a scrapbook dating from 1978-1986.
