Collection Overview

Biography / History
Albert Gallatin Hodges (1802-1881) edited the Frankfort Commonwealth and for a time served as the state printer for Kentucky. A Union supporter, Hodges was also one of Abraham Lincoln's closest confidants from Kentucky.
Scope and Content
The Albert Gallatin Hodges letters consist of two letters: one written by Hodges and the other written to Hodges. The first letter is a draft written by Hodges and Joshua Fry Speed to Abraham Lincoln making a formal complaint about General Stephen Burbridges actions in Kentucky as the Union military commander. William E. Woodruff wrote the second letter to Hodges requesting his intercession with President Lincoln regarding Woodruff's application for Brigadier General.
