Collection Overview

Biography / History
Thomas Kubeck, of Meridean, Connecticut was born November 14, 1949. After being drafted, Kubeck joined the United States Army as a non-commissioned officer on August 14, 1968. He trained at Fort Jackson (SC), Fort Knox (KY), and Fort Hood (TX). He served in Vietnam from July 20, 1969 until April 17, 1970, earning a silver star. He served in the 25th Infantry Division, 3rd Squadron, 4th Cavalry, B Troop, 2nd Platoon as a non-commissioned officer on tanks and armored personnel carriers. Because he rode on top of tanks and armored personnel carriers, he was one of the few soldiers able to carry a camera while on duty. Injured twice in the line of duty, he was retired from the military due to combat wounds. Following his service in the military, he took part in the Vietnam Veterans Aganst the War protests. He worked at the United States Postal Service until retiring in 2002. He currently lives in Lexington, Kentucky, and participated in the first University of Kentucky sponsored honor flight to Washington, D.C. on May 20, 2017.

The Thomas Kubeck Vietnam War photographs (dated 1968-1970, 0.03 cubic feet; 54 items) comprises digital images of photographs taken by Thomas Kubeck during his military service during the Vietnam War from 1969-1970. The photographs also include images taken during his military training at Fort Knox and waiting to be deployed to Vietnam in Oakland, California. Notable subjects include tanks, armored personnel carriers, the Vietnam jungle, the effects of agent orange on the jungle, members of the Viet Cong, Vietnamese villagers, and base-camp life.
