Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- William Lindsay, a native of Rockbridge County, Virginia, moved to Kentucky in 1854 where he read law and began legal practice in Clinton, Kentucky in 1858. Following service in the Confederate Army, he returned to his practice in Clinton and was subsequently elected to the Kentucky legislature (1867-1870) and the Kentucky Court of Appeals (1870-1878), where he served as Chief Justice during 1877-1878. Lindsay practiced law in Frankfort for a number of years thereafter and was elected again to the Kentucky legislature in 1890. He was appointed U.S. Senator in 1893 and elected to a full Senate term in the following year.
- Lindsay married Eleanor Holmes, his third wife, in 1883. Eleanor was active in state and national programs of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A one time vice-president of the national society, she served as chairman of the committee on architecture which oversaw construction of the D. A. R. Memorial Continental Hall in Washington, D. C. (ca. 1903).
- Scope and Content
- The Lindsay family papers (dated 1794-1932, undated bulk 1867-1930; 24.17 cubic feet; 52 document boxes, 3 shoeboxes, 4 oversize boxes) comprise correspondence, legal and financial documents, political speeches and addresses, family and travel photographs, and account books that reflect the professional and personal lives of the nineteenth century Kentucky Senator William Lindsay and his wife Eleanor Holmes Lindsay, vice-president of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
- Much of the collection consists of legal and political correspondence to William Lindsay during his tenure in the Kentucky General Assembly and throughout his career as a judge and lawyer. The collection also features speeches given by Lindsay to the Democratic party and the Senate as well as correspondence to Eleanor Lindsay in her leadership capacities with the National Society of the DAR.
