Collection Overview

Biography / History
Richard French (1792-1854) joined the Kentucky bar in 1820 and practiced law in Covington and Winchester, Kentucky. He married Mary Taliafero (1805-1886); they had two daughters and four sons. French served in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1820 to 1826 and as a judge of the circuit court in 1829. A Jacksonian Democrat, he served three nonconsecutive terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (1835-1837, 1843-1845, 1847-1849). In addition, he unsuccessfully ran for governor of Kentucky in 1840. He died in Covington, Kentucky, in 1854.
Scope and Content
The collection consists of two letters to Richard French from William Johnson concerning depositions for a court case involving the Payne family.
