Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- James Howard Evans (1895-1969) was a prominent engineer and farmer in Lexington, Kentucky and graduate of the University of Kentucky. His wife, Catherine Peter Evans (1896-1964) wrote numerous short stories, often about Kentucky immediately before and after the Civil War, and published a diary of her ancestor, Major William Dallam. Her grandfather, Dr. Robert Peter (1805-1894) an immigrant from England, was a physician, scientist, and member of the Transylvania University medical school in the mid-19th century.
- Scope and Content
- The Evans-Peter family papers (dated 1820-1941, 10 boxes, one wrapped item, one map folder) comprises photographs, broadsides, correspondence, short story manuscripts, printed materials, patent drawings, and a scrapbook which document the Peter and Evans families of Central Kentucky. The bulk of the collection consists of photographs documenting Catherine Peter Evans, her family, and friends; the Peter family estate at Winton; her grandfather Dr. Peter Roberts (1805-1894) of Transylvania University; and the city of Lexington. The photographs documenting Winton primarily depict farming activities involving ponds, mills, livestock, African-American farm workers and dwellings, and hemp breaking around the turn of the twentieth-century. Also included are Catherine Evans's short story manuscripts, her correspondence, patent information and patent drawings relating to James Howard Evans's work as an engineer, records and stocks for the Lexington-Newtown Turnpike Company, and a small collection of Nazi propaganda publications printed prior to the United States' involvement in World War II. The scrapbook contains articles written by Dr. Robert Peter. Notable items in the collection include broadsides relating to the Transylvania University medical school as well as broadsides concerning the operation of the True American run by Cassius M. Clay.
