Collection Overview

Biography / History
W.Y. Demaree was a Professor of English at Kentucky Wesleyan College from 1897 to 1890. No other biographical information available on Demaree. The Millersburg Male and Female Seminary was founded in 1852 by John Miller in Millersburg, Kentucky. By 1868, the Millersburg Female College was established and stayed in the same Millersburg location, and the men's college, the Kentucky Wesleyan College, was split and moved to Winchester, Kentucky. The Millersburg College was then renovated into the Millersburg Military Institution in the 1930s where it stayed open until 2006. As of 2016, the property is a community venture.

American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Millersburg, Kentucky scrapbook (dated circa 1880-1890; 0.15 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises a single scrapbook that contains newspaper clippings featuring poems, short stories, cartoons, biblical terms and life lessons. These clippings share common themes such as; marriage, etiquette for young ladies, church, education, comedy and romance. The clippings come from various newspapers from Kentucky and other states like Massachusetts, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The inside front cover of the scrapbook features a picture of Millersburg Female College and a card that states the scrapbook is part of the private library of an individual named W.Y. Demaree, and the interior back cover features a picture of Kentucky Wesleyan College.
The Millersburg, Kentucky scrapbook is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
