Collection Overview

Biography / History
Charles F. Herrick (1930-1992) was born in Ohio to Gordon F. Herrick (1905-1970) and Helen C. Herrick (1906-1975).He attended St. Mary's high school in St. Mary, Kentucky before joinging the US Army in 1951. He served from 1951 to 1953 as a Private First Class, stationed in Korea. After serving, he attended the University of Louisville, receiving a BS in health and physical education in 1957; a Masters of Education in Administration, Supervision, Guidance and Counseling in 1961; and an A.S.Ed in Administration and Supervision in 1967. He then went on to attend Heed University in Florida where he received his PhD in Guidance and Counseling/Education in 1979. Herrick worked in education his whole life, he was a High School Teacher, Assistant Principal, Counselor, and Director of Adult Education in Bullitt County; a Registrar/Director of Admissions, Evening Coordinator - Guidance Counselor, and Instructor for Jefferson Community College; and Assistant Superintendent, Supervisor, Director of Pupil Personnel, and Counselor at Cloverport Community Schools. He was a member of many professional associations including: North American Society of Adlerian Psychology, Kentucky Personnel and Guidance Association, Kentucky Association of Student Financial Aid Officers, and Kentucky Education Association.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Charles F. Herrick photograph albums (dated 1947-1951, 1977-1986, undated; 0.46 cubic feet; 5 boxes) comprises two photograph albums that document the life of Charles Herrick in a seminary and the armed forces in Kentucky and Asia in the mid-twentieth century. The first album depicts Herrick in the military, serving in Korea and Japan. He takes photographs of his fellow soldiers, views from where he is stationed, trips taken while on liberty, soldiers encountered, the emperor's palace in Japan, guards at the 38th parallel, and left-over military installations from Japan's occupation of Korea. The second album showcases Herrick's life as a seminary student at St. Mary's, with images of masses held, fellow seminarians, educators, school grounds, monasteries, churches, and events hosted by the school.
The Charles F. Herrick photograph albums collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
