- Biography / History
- Lucy Jane Tanner McCauley, was the eldest daughter born to Oliver and Elizabeth Tanner in Keene, Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1842. Her father was a millwright and had built Lemon & Flournoy Mills at Newtown, Scott County, Kentucky. At age 15, Lucy (then called "Miss Lucie") began teaching school in Jessamine and Woodford County public schools. She married Hugh McCauley, a farmer in Jessamine County. Lucy taught in Keene and Troy schools, boarded with students, and returned home to the farm on the weekends. In 1885, she opened Locust Grove Seminary, a private boarding school using her and Hugh's home as the location. Lucy McCauley remained teaching until a brief illness before her death on October 8, 1915.

- The Lucie Tanner McCauley diaries (1870-1872; 0.04 cubic feet; 1 microfilm reel) includes two diaries written by a school teacher in Jessamine County, Kentucky. The diaries contain entries about McCauley's day-to-day life with descriptions about the weather, health traveling to nearby towns, church services, teaching exercises, and farm activities. She also wrote recipes for desserts and lists store purchases. The diaries are written in pencil or pale ink for the years 1870-1871 and 1872.
