Collection Overview

Biography / History
Charles Hanson Sumner was born June 30, 1928 to William Charles and Mary Annue Griffin Sumner in Schenectady and raised in Albany, New York. He served in the United States Air Force and then attended Cornell University, where he joined the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and earned a degree in English. In 1956 Sumner wedded Marjorie Marriott and settled in Henrietta, New York. To their marriage three children were born: Rachel, Roger, and Wendy. He worked as a Sales Administration Manager for Pennwalt Corporation. For 72 years Sumner volunteered for the Americans United for Separation of Church and State, a nonprofit organization that advocates for the disassociation of religion and religious organizations from government. He served in various official roles for the national organization and helped establish chapters in Rochester, New York and Nashville, Tennessee. For his activist work he was awarded the Americans United Guardian of Liberty Award, the Eric Steel Award, and the Tennessee Alliance for Progress Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Charles Sumner collection on Separation of Church and State (dated 1930-2022, undated; 9 cubic feet, 12 boxes) primarily comprises articles, papers, speeches, training guides, clippings and other materials related to the advocacy organization, Americans United for the Separation of Church and State or cover progressive activist work from 1950-2021 in Rochester, New York, Nashville, Tennessee, and throughout the United States. The collection consists of official communications, correspondence, leaflets, publications, and campaign related materials from the Americans United for the Separation of Church and State headquarters in Washington, DC. The Rochester Chapter and Nashville Chapter of Americans United materials in the collection includes newsletters, event fliers, meeting and member information, as well as, materials from other local activist organizations. The collection includes publications and event information from the early years of Americans United when the organization name was Protestants and Other Americans for the Separation of Church and State, 1948-1961. Many of the earlier materials in the collection focus on preventing Catholic Church teachings in public schools and politics, while later materials focus on opposing school vouchers and the Religious Right's influence on politics. Some of Charles Sumner's personal records are in the collection like awards, speech transcripts, and correspondence relating to his work as a founding member and chapter president in Rochester and Nashville. The collection also contains research subject files on topics like the Establishment Clause of the United States' Constitution, reproductive rights, and gay rights.
