GROUP INSURARIQE POLICY I
University Personnel has sent a notice reminding us that employeest
on official leave without pay status may continue in the various
group insurance plans contingent upon payment of premiums in advance.
It is the full responsibility of the employee to contact the Staff
Benefits Office to arrange for pre—payment of insurance premiums. _
If pre-payments are not made and the insurance lapses, it is not
possible to obtain automatic reinstatement. Questions/problems with
_ the policy should be addressed to Staff Benefits (7-2831).

Here are some of the events reported in the New York Times, 100
- years ago this week:
The yellow fever epidemic that resulted in the evacuation of New
I Orleans on May 15, 1878, and affected many other areas of the South
~ as well, was reported nearly over. Over 13,000 cases and 4,000
p deaths resulted from the epidemic. L
The Times reported that voters "rescue(d) New York City from the
blighting rule of Tammany" by electing Republican Edward Cooper
mayor by a 20,000 vote majority. _
‘In the "Notes of Literary News" column it was announced that Thomas
Henry Huxley's work on David Hume would soon be published in the
English Men of Letters series, and that "Mrs. Loftie's next book is
Forty—six Social Twitters." (Note: King has the former but not the
latter.)
New Yorkers were shocked to learn that the body of Alexander T. _
Stewart, a nationally—known New York City merchant whose estate was
valued at $40 million, was stolen November 8 from the family vault in
St. Mark's graveyard. It was the first case of body-snatching ever
reported to New York police. The remains were recovered on November

17 and several of those involved were arrested. The chief conspira-
tor was discovered to be George A. Christian, previously arrested
on suspicion of attempting to break into the tomb of Abraham Lincoln.
