V ln 1975, Kentucky farmers harvested fewer acres ol small
grain than in 1974. Wheat acreage was down 15%, barley acreage
decreased 21% and oat acreage remained unchanged (Table 1). ·

V The objective ol the Kentucky small grain variety trials is to
evaluate varieties ol barley, wheat and oats that are commercially
available or may soon be available to Kentucky larniers. New
varieties are continually being developed by agricultural experi-
' ment stations and commercial lirms. Annual evaluation ol` small
- grain varieties and selections provides seedsmen, larmers, and
. other agricultural workers with current information to help them
select the varieties best adapted to their locality and individual
requirements.
Since weather, soil and other environmental liactors will alter
varietal perlormance lrom one location to another, tests are grown .
. _ in lour locations ll in the state (l.e>;ington, liowlinjg Cireeii.
l’rineeton, and i\lurray). Recoinniendations are }`t.’\li€<`(.l <·;i<·h year
