Collection Overview

Biography / History
Katherine Stout Bradley and Eugene Bradley were the children of John Nicholas Bradley, professor of Latin at Georgetown College, lecturer on Baptist theology, farmer, horse breeder, and businessman, and his wife Belle. Katherine was closely involved in efforts to proove the innocence of Caleb Powers, convicted four times of conspiracy to assassinate William Goebel in 1900. Powers was twice given life sentences and once was sentenced to death before being pardoned by Governor Augustus Willson in 1908. He was elected to Congress in 1910 and served four terms. Katherine Bradley coordinated fundraising efforts while Powers was imprisoned, shipping books and copies of his speeches and keeping accounts.
Eugene Bradley graduated from Georgetown in 1912 and received a Master's degree in art from Yale University in 1913. After service in the photographic division of the Signal Corps during World War I, he returned to Georgetown and established a photography studio in conjunction with Katherine. They became known as Kentucky's leading photographers. Katherine later worked for several years as a court examiner in Scott County and became very involved in historic preservation projects.
Scope and Content
The Bradley family papers (dated 1776-1938, undated; 4.39 cubic feet; 4 record storage cartons and 4 photograph boxes) consists of correspondence, financial documents, notebooks, ledgers, and photographs primarily belonging to Katherine S. Bradley, which document her long association with former Kentucky Secretary of State Caleb Powers. The papers also contain material relating to her father, John N. Bradley, and brother, Eugene Bradley.
The Business Materials series consists of the ledgers, journals, receipts, and records of business ventures from John N. Bradley and associates. The Correspondence series consists of letters sent between the Bradley family members and acquaintances concerning both personal and public matters. The Personal materials series compromises primarily notebooks and writings made by Eugene and Katherine Bradley, the majority are stenographic notebooks full of shorthand notes from Katherine's time as a Scott County court examiner. The Caleb Powers series consists of Katherine Bradley's correspondence with Caleb Powers and his friends from 1903 to his death in 1932. The correspondence mainly concerns fundraising for his defense in his numerous trials and appeals relating to the assassination of Governor William Goebel. Powers wrote to Katherine often, first as a grateful friend, then in a more romantic vein. Their relationship cooled after Powers' release and election to Congress, although they continued to exchange letters for some time. The series also contains information concerning Powers' books about his trial and book order ledgers. The Photographic Materials series consists of photographs taken by Eugene Bradley that show the Bradley family and Georgetown, Kentucky.
