- Biography / History
- During World War II, Howard Kearnes Trammell (1919-1993) of Stearns, Kentucky, served in North Africa with the 83rd Bombardier Squadron, 13th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force. Trammell fought in the 1942-1943 Battles of El Alamein, El Agheila, Bouerat, the Battle of the Mareth Line, and the Battle of Tunisia. He suffered a serious shrapnel wound to the mouth on March 20, 1943, and was hospitalized for eight months in Libya, Egypt, and the U.S. From 1943-1944, he served as a bombardier instructor at Midland Field, Texas, with at one point 325 instructors under his supervision. He attended Cumberland College (1936-1937) and the University of Kentucky (1937-39; 1945-47; 1950).
- Scope and Content
- The Howard Trammell letters (dated 1937-1980; 0.23 cubic feet; 1 box) primarily comprise letters written by Kentucky soldier, Howard Trammell, to his family during World War II. The bulk of the letters were written between 1941-1944 and document Trammell's time in basic training and serving in the North African Campaign. Battles documented in the letters include El Alamein, El Agheila, Buerat, Battle of the Mareth Line, and the Battle of Tunisia. The letters also document Trammell's recovery after receiving a shrapnel wound to the mouth. Correspondants include Trammell's wife, Mary Virginia Alcorn Trammell; his mother, Margaret Meadors Trammell; his sister, Mildred Trammell Elliott; and his brother-in-law, Carmon Winstead Elliott. The collection incudes original letters and photocopies of letters not held in the collection. The photocopies also include documents related to Trammell's education and discharge from the military. Additionally, the collection contains a folder of biographical information for Trammell.
