- Biography / History
- Emmet Field Horine was born in Brooks, Kentucky, on August 3, 1885. He studied medicine at the Kentucky School of Medicine, graduating in 1907. He worked as a general practitioner in Louisville until serving in World War I. After his military service, Horine studied cardiology in London and Vienna from 1922 to 1923, making the field his primary focus. Additionally, he taught at the University of Louisville School of Medicine as a Professor of Medicine and Medical History. An avid historian, he published 150 medical and historical articles, including Pioneer Life in Kentucky 1785-1800, by Daniel Drake, edited by Emmet Field Horine and Daniel Drake (1785-1852) Pioneer Physician of the Midwest. He focused his historical interests on Daniel Drake and Ephraim McDowell. Horine died in 1964.

- The Emmet Field Horine papers (dated 1788-1979, undated; 14.23 cubic feet; 37 boxes, 1 item) were accumulated by Dr. Horine over the course of his historical and medical research. The largest portion of these materials consist of Horine's research notes and correspondence about Dr. Daniel Drake, along with various manuscript versions of his books and articles on Drake and his contemporaries. Included are some Drake family genealogical materials, photographs, and original letters and a poetry book from Dr. Daniel Drake.
- Additionally, the collection includes information on the Kentucky State Medical Association, for which Horine was historian, and its presidents. Also included are materials on medical libraries in Kentucky and original material from Doctors Dudley Sharpe Reynolds, Joshua Barker Flint, and Philip Thornberry. Horine's articles on the functioning of the heart are also present as well as his research on agriculture, grapes, horses, and a bibliography of early travels.

August Schachner, 1906-1938
Scope and Contents
The August Schachner series was compiled by Schachner and centers on his research on Dr. Ephraim McDowell. Schachner's biography of McDowell, the pioneering abdominal surgeon, was published in 1921. This series includes Schachner's research correspondence and other various articles and presentations on McDowell. Although no personal relationship appears to exist between Schachner and Horine in the collection, the August Schachner papers were donated as a portion of Dr. Horine's personal papers.

The Correspondence subseries contains information relating to Schachner's research on Ephraim McDowell, primarily for the biography that Schachner wrote. Three folders contain correspondence with specific individuals regarding Ephraim McDowell: Amelia Crawford, J.K. Mitchell, Mrs. William Irvine. One folder, Howard A. Kelly, contains discussions on medical and professional subjects.

The Literary Works subseries includes articles, research, and speeches by August Schachner. The majority of materials within this series concern Ephraim McDowell. There is also material on the Cyclopedia of American Medical Biography to which Schachner was a contributor. The Correspondence series is comprised primarily of letters to or from Dr. Emmet Field Horine. Much of the correspondence relates to Horine's manuscripts and research on Daniel Drake. The majority of the literary works contained within this subseries focus on Daniel Drake, an influential 19th century physician. This includes Horine's published works, Daniel Drake (1785-1852): Pioneer Physician of the Midwest and Pioneer Life in Kentucky 1785-1800, by Daniel Drake, edited by Emmet Field Horine. Articles written by Horine on Ephraim McDowell are also included, as well as medical articles pertaining to the heart.
Horine often wrote his drafts on the back side of sales literature.

In addition, Horine gathered original material for his research, including letters from Daniel Drake, the Drake Family, Joshua Flint, Philip Thornberry, and Dr. Dudley S. Reynolds. The Daniel Drake subseries contains material relating to Horine's research on Daniel Drake and the Drake family. This includes correspondence to and from Horine with Drake relatives, such as Oliver Drake. Correspondence on the location of Daniel Drake collections, requests for Drake radioscripts, and attempts to have a bridge memorialized in Drake's honor are also included. Horine's research on the Drake family biographical and genealogical history is also present.
In addition, original Drake material, collected by Horine is present. This includes an original notebook of poems by Daniel Drake and letters to and from Daniel Drake. The letters are primarily written by Daniel Drake to various colleagues, such as Charles Short. However, letters from H.E. Campbell to Francis Campbell are also present.
