Collection Overview

Biography / History
Lawyer. Richard Hickman Prewitt was born near Boonesborough, Ky., June 11, 1833. After early education in Clark County (Ky.), Prewitt graduated from Bethany College, Va. in 1853; a few years later he received his MA degree, also from Bethany College. He attended Transylvania University, Lexington, Ky. (1855-1856) and graduated from the University of Louisville with a degree in law in 1857. From 1857 to 1863 he practiced law in Lexington, Ky., with Roger W. Hanson. After the death of his law partner in 1863, he continued to practice law until 1866.
Lawyer Roger Weightman Hanson was born August 27, 1827 in Winchester, Ky. After serving as a lieutenant in the War with Mexico, he returned home, fought a duel in which he was severely wounded and while convalescing from his wound he studied law. In 1850 he began his law practice in Winchester and in 1853 was elected to the state legislature from Winchester. In 1855, after moving to Lexington he was again elected to serve in the state legislature, this time representing Fayette County. It was in Lexington where he practiced law with Richard Prewitt from 1857 until his death in 1863.
