L FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK
There seems to be an unfortunate resurgence of censorship in
our "liberated" times. This problem has been around a long time.
July ll "celebrates" Bowdler's Day. Thomas Bowdler was a British
physician, born near Bath, England on July 11, 1754. He left his
I first calling, medicine, to clear up the language in
' Shakespeare's plays. He removed all words and expressions he
felt to be indecent or impious, or "which cannot with propriety -
be read aloud in a family." He didn't stop with Shakespeare. In
fact, he also censored the Old Testament and History of the
Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire by Edward Gibbon. His
censorship was so offensive that his name became synoymous with
self-righteous expurgation that it has become a part of our
language. This little tidbit came from the 1985 Chases‘s Annual
Events, page 107.

The new SPEC Kit, #124, is entitled "Barcoding of
Collections in ARL Libraries", and was prepared by our very own
Gail Kennedy and Mike Lach. The kit summarizes the perils and
pitfalls of barcoding discovered in a variety of ARL libraries,
including the University of Kentucky.
