Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Military Board of Kentucky was created at the outbreak of the Civil War by the Unionist dominated General Assembly. The Board, presided over by Governor Beriah Magoffin (1815-1885), was to oversee Kentucky's armed forces protect Kentucky's neutrality during the conflict. The Board stripped the Confederate leaning Kentucky State Guard of its funds and supplies, giving them to Unionist Home Guard units. Magoffin was eventually demoted to a member of the board and later removed all together.

- The Kentucky Military Board minute book (dated 1861-1862; 0.1 cubic feet; 1 item) documents the meetings of the Military Board from 1861-1862. It includes agenda items, location and date of these meetings, and decisions voted upon by the board. The ledger contains details concerning the operation of the armed forces of Kentucky as a neutral state during the Civil War.
