- Thomas Janoski was a professor of sociology at University of Kentucky (UK), Lexington, Kentucky, from 1996 to 2020 and Director of the Quantitative Initiative in the Policy and Political Sciences in UK's College of Arts and Sciences from 2013-2016. Born in 1947, Janoski was raised in Detroit, Michigan. He obtained a BA in business administration from Michigan State University, Lansing, Michigan, in 1969. After serving in the United State Army from 1970-1971 and working in the Veterans Administration Regional Office (VA) in Detroit and Allen Park, Michigan, from 1971 to 1973, he continued work in the VA in Los Angeles, California, and obtained an MA in sociology from California State University in 1979. He was awarded his Ph.D. in sociology from the University of California, Berkely, in 1986. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for the Redevelopment of Industrialized Economics at Michigan State University (1986-1987) and a faculty member in the Sociology Department at Duke University from 1987-1996 before starting his employment at the University of Kentucky in 1996.
- Janoski's research interests include political socility, citizenship, and civil society; international migration, immigration, and naturalization; the sociology of work and lean production; complex organizations, industrial relations, and bargaining theory; and comparaitve, historical, and quantitative methodologies. He has published 12 monographs, 23 book chapters, and 14 refeered journal articles, and received 32 research grants or fellowships. He has received the Emerald Literati Network Award for Excellence in 2009 and in 2010; the Outstanding Service Award from the University of Kentucky Department of Sociology, 2000; and the American Sociological Association Political Sociology Section's Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Award, 1991.

The countries include Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The research was funded by a National Science Foundation research grant, 2001-2004. Janoski published the initial theories with Elizabeth Glennie in 1995 in "The Integration of Immigrants into Advanced Industrial Societies" in the edited volume Migration Citizenship and Ethno-National Identities in the European Union. In addition to his 1998 book, Citizenship and Civil Society (Cambridge University Press), the final write up is in Janoski's 2010 book The Ironies of Citizenship: Naturalization and Integration in Industrialized Countries (Cambridge University Press).
