- Biography / History
- Cyrus Edwards was probably a brother of Ninian Edwards, governor of Illinois from 1826-1830. Matilda Edwards, presumably Cyrus Edwards' daughter, was a friend of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln in Springfield, Illinois. Isabella Reed Clay Weisinger was the widow of Sidney Clay and related to the Edwardses.
- Scope and Content
- This is a microfilmed collection of letters of the Edwards and Reed families of Illinois and Kentucky. It includes some typescripts, but most of the letters are holographs. There are letters from Cyrus Edwards, Matilda Edwards, and Isabella Reed Clay Weisinger. Most of the letters are about family matters, including one which describes the death and funeral in 1829 of Thomas B. Reed, a Lexington, Ky. native who became U.S. Senator from Mississippi. Matilda's letters mention social events in Springfield, Illinois in the early 1840's and were used by Ruth Painter Randall in her biography of Mary Todd Lincoln.
