- Biography / History
- June Ward Gayle was born in New Liberty, a small town in Owen County, Ky. He attended Concord College, a local school, and Georgetown College before quitting at the age of sixteen to farm. Later he ran a coal yard in Moxley, Ky. Gayle served as Owen County Deputy Sheriff and Sheriff, and in 1899 was elected to fill the unexpired term of Congressman Evan E. Settle, who had died. Gayle was not re-elected to a full term. He pursued a career in banking until his death in 1942.

- The June Ward Gayle papers consist of a scrapbook, photographs, and elections badges, which document his career. The scrapbook contains newspaper clippings, mostly about Gayle's election to Congress and his later career in banking, a typescript story about an old-fashioned fair held in New Liberty, Ky., and two election badges. The book in which the clippings are pasted is a printed memorial to Gayle's predecessor, Evan E. Settle. Some of the clippings relate to other members of the Gayle family.
