Collection Overview

Biography / History
The Lexington Lodge no. 1 is a Masonic Lodge located in Lexington, Kentucky. It was founded in 1788 by the Grand Lodge of Virginia as Lexington Lodge no. 25. It became no. 1 in 1800 after the formation of the Grand Lodge of Kentucky. In 1861 during the Civil War, Union Troops occupied the lodge hall and most of the records since the founding of the lodge were destroyed. Following the Civil War, fraternal organizations became imcreasingly popular. During this time, Lexington Lodge no. 1 created programs that increased their membership through the early 1900s. Lexington Lodge no. 1's membership increased steadily, including two large membership spikes after World War I and World War II, until 1962. After 1962, member retention decreased, causing a decrease of overall membership, from 1667 masons to closer to 300. At the turn of the century, engagement increased for Lexington Lodge no. 1's members, and the average age of the active member began to shift younger. Notable early members of Lexington Lodge no. 1 include Henry Clay, Levi Todd, General Thomas Bodley, Gideon Shryock, Joseph Hamilton Daviess, James B. January, John M. McCalla, Benjamin W. Dudley, and Samuel Postlethwaite.
Scope and Content
The Lexington Lodge no. 1 records (dated 1797-2020; 18.2 cubic feet; 15 boxes, 15 items) primarily comprise membership records, meeting minutes, ledgers, annual reports, pamphlets, correspondence, and notes that document the membership and administration of the Masonic Lodge, Lexington Lodge no. 1, in Lexington, Kentucky. The Membership records include completed forms for petitions, dues, and demits. Additionally, the records include membership ledgers. The minutes consist of bound and loose meeting minutes for the lodge from 1860-2007. The majority of records from the late 1700s until 1860 were destroyed during the Civil War when the lodge was occupied by Confederate forces. The records also include financial ledgers and annual reports, letters and pamphlets relating to events and projects, and letters regarding relationships between the Lodge and outside parties.
