- Biography / History
- Anna Margaret Hoppe (1897-1973) was born in Gretna, Kansas to Friedrich Hoppe (1860-1943) and Agnes Gibson (1863-1926). She was one of eleven children, having seven brothers and three sisters. In 1916, Anna married Walter R. Addie (1894-1970) of Agra, Kansas. Together the couple had four children – Viola (1917-2007), L. Dee (1920-1984), E. Lee (1924-2003), and Andrew (1940-2016). In the mid-1920s, Anna and her family moved from Kansas to Bloomington, Indiana where the couple stayed for the remainder of their lives.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Anna Hoppe Addie letters (dated1912-1944, 1964-1969, undated; 0.21 cubic feet; 10 folders) comprise letters that document the lives of Anna, her husband Walter Addie, and their families in Kansas and Indiana in the twentieth century. The majority of the letters are between Anna and Walter, prior to their marriage, and discuss seeing family and friends, visits from the other's family, attending social dances, participating in local clubs, inside jokes about grammar and typing, and their personal health. Anna receives letters from her sisters, sisters-in-law, and friends as well, discussing family gossip, personal health, social visits, employment, children, and education. The collection also includes two letters from Viola, Walter and Anna's daughter, to them after her marriage discussing having her parents stay for dinner when they are in town, work for her and her husband, and how her children are.
- The Anna Hoppe Addie letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
