Collection Overview

Biography / History: The presence of the Franciscan Order in Mexico dates back to circa 1519. The order set up missions across Spanish holdings in the New World in order to both pacify and convert the indigenous peoples, enabling Spanish control over the region.

Scope and Content: The Noticia, la precisa no mas, de mi viaje a San Blas, emprendida por disposicion divina indispensable, aunque segun el parecer del mundo con yerro, y apostasia de la religion (dated 1782 September 7; 0.05 cubic feet; 1 item) comprises the account of an apostate Franciscan friar's travels through Mexico to ascertain the state of religious life. Translated as "Just a concise account of my trip to San Blas, undertaken by indispensable divine disposition, though to the world it may seem an error, and as if I were commiting apostasy", the account documents his departure from his convent in Puebla on horseback on May 7, 1782. His journey that lasted until September. He was possessed by faith, which led him to disobey his superior, Isidro Murillo. The latter had granted him license to go only to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Ocotlán, founded in 1687 and situated in the vicinity of the city of Tlaxcala. Instead, as the friar confesses in the account, inspired by the voice of God, he embarked on a "viaje misterioso" which took him through Mexico and concluded with his apostasy. The friar gives a first-hand account of the numerous places he visited as he travelled from Puebla to San Blas, ending up in Mexico City. He describes the dereliction of duty by the local clergy in many of the places he visited. His account also contains descriptions of daily life in Mexico during the late 18th century. On September 5th, he returned to the church and was lodged in the Convento Recoleto de San Cosme. Although the Franciscan Order forgave him, at the time of writing his account, he was awaiting investigation by the Inquisition.; This collection is a part of the Lou Emma Wilson Mexicana Collection, which includes manuscripts, books, other printed materials, and photographs representing all aspects of Mexican culture from the 16th century through the present. This growing collection is made possible through a special endowment established by Dr. Alberta Wilson Server, Professor of Romance Languages at the University of Kentucky, in 1963 to honor her mother Lou Emma Wilson. More of the collection, including several rare books, can be found through the library catalog.
