RESPONSIYE SGRIPTURE READINGS. '

The American Revised text is used in these readings, as
published by Thomas Nelson & J'on, New York. This text is
undoubtedly the most perfect English text in use.

1 PSALM 1.

1 Blessed is the man that walketh
not in the counsel of the wick-
ed,

Nor standeth in the way of sin-
ners,

Nor sitteth in the seat of scoff-
ers;

2 But his delight is in the law of
Jehovah;

And on his law doth he meditate
day and night.

3 And he shall be like a tree

‘ planted by the streams of
water,

That bringeth forth its fruit in
its season,

Whose leaf also doth not Wither;

And whatsoever he doeth shall
prosper.

4 The wicked are not so,

But are like the chaff which the
wind driveth away.

5 Therefore the wicked shall not
stand in the judgment,

Nor sinners in the congregation
of the righteous. .

6 For Jehovah knoweth the way of
the righteous;

But the way of the wicked shall
perish.

2 PSALM 2.

1 Why do the nations rage,
And the peOples meditate a vain
thing?
2 The kings of the earth set them-
selves,

And the rulers‘ take counsel to- _

gether, ,
Against Jehovah, and against his
anointed, saying,
3 Let us break their bonds asunder,
And cast away their cords from
us.

4 He that sitteth in the heavens
will laugh:

The Lord will have them in
derision.

5 Then will he speak unto them
in his wrath,

And vex them in his sore dis-
pleasure:

6 Yet I have set my king

Upon my holy hill of Zion.
7 I will tell of the decree:
Jehovah said unto me, Thou art
my son;
This day have I begotten thee.

8 Ask of me, and I will give thee
the nations for thine inherit-
ance,

And the uttermost parts of the
earth for thy possession.

9 Thou shalt break them with a rod
of iron;

Thou shalt dash them in pieces
like a potter’s vessel.

10 Now therefore be Wise, 0 ye
kings:

Be instructed, ye judges of the
earth.

11 Serve Jehovah with fear,

And rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the son, lest he be angry,
and ye perish in the way,

For his wrath will soon be kin-
dled.

Blessed are all they that take
refuge in him.

3 PSALM 8.

1 O Jehovah, our Lord,

How excellent is thy name in all
the earth,

Who hast set thy glory upon the
heavens!

2 Out of the mouth of babes and
sucklings hast thou established
strength, ‘

Because of thine adversaries,

That thou mightest still the ene~

3 When I consider thy heavens, the
work of thy fingers,

The moon and the stars, which
thou hast ordained;

54 What is man, that thou art mind-
ful of him?

And the son of man, that thou
visitest him?

5 For thou hast made him but lit-
tle lower than God,

And crownest him With glory and
honor.

6 Thou makest him to have do-
minion over the works of thy
hands;

Thou hast put all things under
his feet:

7 All sheep and oxen,

Yea, and the beasts of the field,

8 The birds of the heavens, and the
fish of the sea,

Whatsoever passeth through the
paths of the seas.

9 0 Jehovah, our Lord,

How excellent is thy name in all

the earth!

4 PSALM 15.

1 Jehovah, who shall sojourn in thy
tabernacle?

Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?
2 He that walketh uprightly, and
worketh righteousness,
And Speaketh truth in his heart;
3 He that slandereth not with his
tongue,
Nor doeth evil to his friend,
Nor taketh up a reproach against
his neighbor;
4 In whose eyes a reprobate is
despised,
But who honoreth them that fear
Jehovah;
He that sweareth to his own
hurt, and changeth not;
5 He that putteth not out his
money to interest,
Nor taketh reward against the
innocent.
He that doeth these things shall
never be moved.

5 PSALM 19.

1 The heavens declare the glory
of God;
And the firmament show-eth his
handiwork.
2 Day unto day uttereth speech,

And night unto night showeth
knowledge.
3 There is no speech nor language;
Their voice is not heard.
4 Their line is gone out through
all the earth,
And their words to the end of
the world.
In them hath he set a tabernacle
for the sun,
5 Which is as a bridegroom com-
ing out of his chamber,
And rejoiceth as a strong man
to run his course.
6 His going forth is from the end
of the heavens,
And his circuit unto the ends of it;
And there is nothing hid from
the heat thereof.
7 The law of Jehovah is perfect,
restoring the soul:
The testimony of Jehovah is sure,
making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of Jehovah are
right, rejoicing the heart:
The commandment of Jehovah is
pure, enlightening the eyes.
9 The fear of Jehovah is clean,
enduring for ever:
The ordinances of Jehovah are
true, and righteous altogether.
10 More to be desired are they than
gold, yea, than much fine gold;
Sweeter also than honey and the
droppings of the honeycomb.
11 Moreover by them is thy servant
warned:
In keeping them there is great
reward.
12 Who can discern his errors?
Clear thou me from hidden faults.
13 Keep back thy servant also from
presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over

me:

Then shall I be upright,

And I shall be clear from great
transgression.

14 Let the words of my mouth and

the meditation of my heart

Be acceptable in thy sight,

0 Jehovah, my rock, and my

redeemer.

6 PSALM 23.

1 Jehovah is my shepherd; I shall
not want.

2 He maketh me to lie down in
green pastures;
He leadeth me beside still waters.

 ~.-~. «M... A..- ..-

3 He restoreth my soul:

He guideth me in the paths of
righteousness for his name’s sake.

'4 Yea, though I walk thrOugh the
valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil; for thou art
with me;

Thy rod and thy staff, they com-
fort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me
in the presence of mine ene-
mies:

Thou hast anointed my head with
oil;
My cup runneth over,

6 Surely kindness and lovingkind-
ness shall follow me all the
days of my life;

And I shall dwell in the house
of Jehovah for ever.

7 PSALM 24.

1 The earth is Jehovah’s, and the
fulness thereof;
The world, and they that dwell
therein.
2 For he hath founded it upon the
seas,
And established it upon the floods.
3 Who shall ascend into the hill
of Jehovah?
And who shall stand in his holy
place?
4 He that hath clean hands, and a
pure heart;
Who hath not lifted up his soul
unto falsehood,
And hath not sworn deceitfully.
5 He shall receive a blessing from
Jehovah,
And righteousness from the God
of his salvation.
6 This is the generation of them
that seek after him,
That seek thy face, even Jacob.
[Selah
-7 Lift up your heads, 0 ye gates;
And be ye lifted up, ye everlast-
ing doors:
And the King of glory will come in.
8 Who is the King of glory?
Jehovah strong and mighty,
Jehovah mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, 0 ye gates;
Yea, .lift them up, ye everlast-
ing doors:
And the King of glory will come in.
10 Who is this King of glory?
Jehovah of hosts,
He is the King of glory.

l 8 PSALM 42. '

1 As the hart panteth after the
water brooks,
So panteth my soul after thee,
O God.
2 My soul thirsteth for God, for
the living God:
When shall I come. and appear
before God?
3 My tears have been my food day
and night,
While they continually say unto
me, Where is thy God?
4 These things I remember, and
pour out my soul within me,
How I went with the throng, and
led them to the house of God,
With the voice of joy and praise,
a multitude keeping holyday.
5 Why art thou cast down, 0 my
soul?
And why art thou
within me?
Hope thou in God; for I shall
yet praise him ‘
For the help of his countenance.
6 0 my God, my soul is cast down
within me:
Therefore do I remember thee
from the land of the Jordan,
And the Hermons, from the hill
Mizar.
7 Deep calleth unto deep at the
noise of thy waterfalls:
A11 thy waves and thy billows
are gone over me.
8 Yet Jehovah will command his
lovingkindness in the day-time;
And in the night his song shall
be with me,
Even a prayer unto the God of
my life.
9 I will say unto God my rock,
Why hast thou forgotten me?
Why go I mourning because of
the oppression of the enemy?
10 As with a sword in my bones,
mine adversaries reproach me,
While they continually say unto
me, Where is thy God?
11 Why art thou cast down, 0 my
soul?
And why art thou disquietedl
within me?
Hope thou in God; for I shall:
yet praise him, ‘
Who is the help of my counten-
ance, and my God.

PSALM 46.

God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear,
though the earth do change,
And though the mountains be
shaken into the heart of the seas;
3 Though the waters thereof roar
and be troubled,

Though the mountains tremble
with the swelling thereof.

4 There is a river, the streams

whereof make glad the city of
God, .,

The holy place of the tabernacles
of the Most High.

5 God is in the midst of her; she
shall not be moved:

God will help her, and that right
early.

6 The nations raged, the kingdoms

. were moved:

He uttered his voice, the earth
melted.

7 Jehovah of hosts is with us;

The God of Jacob is our refuge.

8 Come, behold the works of J e-
hovah,

What desolations he hath made
in the earth.

9 He maketh wars to cease unto
the end of the earth;

He breaketh the bow, and cut-
teth the spear in sunder;

He burneth the chariots in the
fire. ,

10 Be still, and know that I am
God:

I will be exalted among the na-
tions, I will be exalted in the
earth.

11 Jehovah of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our refuge.

I O PSALM 84.

1 How amiable are thy tabernacles,
O Jehovah of hosts!
2 My soul longeth, yea, even faint-
eth for the courts of Jehovah;
My heart and my'flesh cry out
unto the living God.
8 Yea, the sparrow hath found her
a. house,
And the swallow a nest for her-
self, where she may lay her
young:

Even thine altars, O Jehovah o!
hosts, ’
My King, and my God.

4 Blessed are they that dwell in
thy house:

They will be still praising thee.
[Selah

5 Blessed is the man whose strength
is in thee;

In whose heart are the highways
to Zion.

6 Passing through the valley of
Weeping they make it a place
of springs;

Yea, the early rain covereth it
with blessings.

7 They go from strength to strength;

Every one of them appeareth
before God in Zion.

8 O Jehovah God of hosts, hear my
prayer;

Give ear, 0 God of Jacob.
9 Behold, 0 God our shield,
And look upon the face of thine
anointed. "

10 For a day in thy courts is bet-
ter than a thousand.

I had rather be a doorkeep-er in
the house of my God,
Than to dwell in the tents of

wickedness.
11 For Jehovah God is a sun and
a shield:
Jehovah will give grace and
glory;

No good thing will be withheld
from them that walk uprightly.
12 O Jehovah of hosts,
Blessed is the man that trust-
eth in thee.

1 1 PSALM 9o.

1 Lord, thou hast been our dwell-
ing-place
In all generations.
2 Before the mountains were
brought forth,
Or ever thou hadst formed the
earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to ever-
lasting, thou art God.
3 Thou turnest man to destruction,
And sayest, Return, ye children
of men.
4 For a thousand years in thy sight
Are but as yesterday when it is
past,
And as a watch in the night.
5 Thou carriest them away as with
a flood; they are as a sleep:

In the morning they are like
grass which groweth up.
6 In the morning it flourisheth,
and groweth up;
In the evening it is cut down,
and withereth.
7 For we are consumed in thine

anger,
And in thy wrath are we
troubled.
8 Thou hast set our iniquities be‘
fore thee,

Our secret sins in the light of
thy countenance.
9 For all our days are passed away
in thy wrath:
We bring our years to an end as
a sigh.
10 The days of our years are three-
score years and ten,
Or even by reason of strength
fourscore years; .
Yet is their pride but labor an
sorrow;
For it is soon gone, and we fly
away.
11 Who knoweth the power of thine
anger,
And thy wrath according to the
fear that is due unto thee?
12 So teach us to remember our days,
That we may get us a heart of
wisdom.
13 Return, 0 Jehovah; how long?
And let it repent thee concerning
thy servants.
14 Oh satisfy us in the morning
with thy lovingkindness,
That we may rejoice and be glad
all our days.
15 Make us glad according to the
days wherein thou hast afflicted

us,
And the years wherein we have
seen evil.
16 Let thy work appear unto thy
servant‘s,

And thy glory upon their children.
17 And let the favor of the Lord
our God be upon us;
And establish thou the work of
our hands upon us;
Yea, the work of our hands
establish thou it.

1 2 PSALM 96.

1 Oh sing unto Jehovah a new
song:
Sing unto Jehovah, all the earth.
2 Sing unto Jehovah, bless his
name; .

Show forth his salvation from
day to day.

3 Declare his glory among the na-

tions,
His marvellous works among all
the peoples.

4 For great is J eho-vah,‘ and greatly

.to be praised:
He is to be feared above all god-s.
For all the gods of the peoples
are idols;
But Jehovah made the heavens.
6 Honor and majesty are before
him:
Strength and beauty are in his
sanctuary.
Ascribe unto Jehovah, ye kin-
dreds of the peOples,
Ascribe unto Jehovah glory and
strength.
8 Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory
due unto his name:
Bring an offering, and come into
his courts.
9 Oh worship Jehovah
array:
Tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, Jehovah
reigneth:
The world also is established
that it cannot be moved:
He will judge the peoples with
equity.
11 Let the heavens be glad, and
let the earth rejoice;
Let the sea roar, and the fulness
thereof;
12 Let the field exult, and all that
is therein;
Then shall all the trees of the
wood sing for joy
13 Before Jehovah; for he cometh,
For he cometh to judge the earth:
He will judge the world with
righteousness,
And the peoples with his truth.

13 PSALM 100.

1 Make a joyful noise unto Je-
hovah, all ye lands.
2 Serve Jehovah with gladness:
Come before his presence with
singing.
3 Know ye that Jehovah, he is God:
It is he that hath made us, and
we are his;
, We are his people, and the sheep
of his pasture.
4 Enter into his gates with thanks—

And into his courts with praise:
GiVe thanks unto him, and bless
his name.

5 For Jehovah is good; his loving-
kindness endureth for ever,
And his. faithfulness unto all

generations.

14 PSALM 103.

1 Bless Jehovah, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless
his holy name.
2 Bless Jehovah, O my soul,
And forget not all his benefits:
3 Who forgiveth all thine iniq-
uities;
Who healeth all thy diseases;
4 Who redeemeth thy life from
destruction;
Who crowneth thee with loving-
kindness and tender mercies;
6 Who satisfieth thy desire with
1 good things,
So that thy youth is renewed like
the eagle.
6 Jehovah executeth righteous acts,
And judgments for all that are
oppressed.
7 He made known his ways unto
Moses,
His doings unto the children of
Israel.
8 Jehovah is merciful and gracious,

Slow to anger, and abundant in.

lovingkindness.

. 9 He will not always chide;

Neither will he keep his anger

for ever.
10 He hath not dealt with us after
our sins,
Nor rewarded us after our iniq-
uities.

11 For as the heavens are high
above the earth,
So great is his lovingkindness
toward them that fear him.
12 As far as the east is from the
west,
So far hath he removed our trans
gressions from us.
13 Like as a father pitieth his
children,
So Jehovah pitieth them that fear
him.
14 For he knoweth our frame;
He remembereth that we are dust.
15 As for man, his days are as
grass;
As a flower of the field, so he
flourisheth.

16 For the wind passeth over if,
and it is gone;

And the place thereof shall know
it no more.

17 But the lovingkindness of Je-
hovah is from everlasting to
everlasting upon them that
fear him,

And his righteousness unto chil«
dren’s children;

18 To such as keep his covenant,

And to those that remember his
precepts to do them.

19 Jehovah hath established his
throne in the heavens;

And his kingdom ruleth over all.

20 Bless Jehovah, ye his angel-s,

That are mighty in strength, that
fulfil his word,

Hearliening unto the voice of his
word.

21 Bless Jehovah, all ye his hosts,

Ye ministers of his, that do his
pleasure.

22 Bless Jehovah, all ye his works,

In all places of his dominion:
Bless Jehovah, O my soul.

15 PSALM 121.

1 I will lift up mine eyes unto
the mountains:
From whence shall my help
come?

2 My help cometh from Jehovah.
Who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to

be moved:
He that keepeth thee will not
slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel
Will never slumber nor sleep.
5 Jehovah is thy keeper:
Jehovah is thy shade upon thy
right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite thee by
day,
Nor the moon by night.
7 Jehovah will keep thee from all
evil;
He will keep thy soul. ‘
8 Jehovah will keep thy going out
and thy coming in
From this time forth and for
evermore.

SELECTIONS FROM ISAIAH.
17 Isaiah xi. 1:10.

1 And there shall come forth a shoot
out of the stock of Jesse, and abranch
out- of his roots shall bear fruit.

2 And the Spirit of Jehovah shall
rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom
and understanding, the spirit of
counsel and might, the spirit of
knowledge and of the fear of Je-
hovah.

3 And his delight shall be in the
fear of Jehovah; and he shall not
judge after the sight of his eyes,
neither decide after the hearing of
his ears;

4 But with righteousness shall he‘
judge the poor, and decide with
equity for the meek of the earth;
and he shall smite the earth withl
the rod of his mouth; and with the
breath of his lips shall he slay the
wicked.

5 And righteousness shall be the
girdle of his waist, and faithfull-
ness the girdle of his loins.

6 And the wolf shall dwell with
the lamb, and the leopard shall lie
down with the kid; and the calf
and the young lion and the fatling
together; and a little child shall
lead them.

7 And the cow and the bear shall
feed; their young ones shall lie
down together; and the lion Shall
eat straw like the ox.

8 And the sucking child shall
play on the hole of the asp, and the
weaned child shall put his hand on
the adder’s den.

9 They shall not hurt nor destroy
in all my holy mountain; for the
earth shall be full of the knowledge
of Jehovah, as the waters cover the
sea.

10 And it shall come to pass in
rthat day, that the root of Jesse, that

commanded

standeth for an ensign of the peo-
ples, unto him shall the nations
seek; and his resting-place shall be
glorious.

1 8 Isaiah xxxv. 1:10.

1 The wilderness and the dry
land shall be glad; and the desert
shall rejoice, and blossom as the
rose. ‘

2 It shall blossom abundantly,
and rejoice even with joy and sing-
ing; the glory of Lebanon shall be
given unto it, the excellency of
Carmel and Sharon: they shall see
the glory of Jehovah, the excellency
of our God.

3 Strengthen ye the weak hands,
and confirm the feeble knees.

4 Say to them that are of a fear-
ful heart, Be strong, fear not: be-
hold, your God will come with
vengeance, with the recompense of
God; he will come and save you.

5 Then the eyes of the blind shall
be opened, and the ears of the deaf
shall be unstopped.

6 Then shall the lame man leap
as a hart, and the tongue of the
dumb shall sing; for in the wilder-
ness shall waters break out, and
streams in the desert.

7 And the glowing sand shall be-
come a pool, and the thirsty ground
springs of water: in the habitation
of jackals, where they lay, shall be
grass with reeds and rushes.

8 And a highway shall be there,
and a way, and it shall be called
The way of holiness; the unclean
shall not pass over it; but it shall
be for the redeemed: the wayfaring
men, yea fools, shall not err therein.

9 No lion shall be there, nor shall
any ravenous beast go up thereon;
they shall not be found there; but
the redeemed shall walk there:

10 And the ransomed of Jehovah
shall return, and come with sing-
ing unto Zion; and everlasting joy
shall be upon their heads: they

.shall obtain gladness and joy, and

sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

19 Isaiah x1. 1:11.

1 Comfort ye, comfort ye my peo-
ple, saith your God.

2 Speak ye comfortably to Jeru-
salem; and cry unto her, that her
warfare is accomplished, that her

iniquity is pardoned, that she hath
received of Jehovah’s hand double
for all her sins.

3 The voice of one that crieth,
Prepare ye in the wilderness the
way of Jehovah; make level in the
desert at highway for our God.

4 Every valley shall be exalted,
and every mountain and hill shall
be made low; and the uneven shall
be made level, and the rough
places a plain:

5 And the glory of Jehovah shall
be revealed, and all flesh shall see
it together; for the mouth of Je-
hovah hath spoken it:

6 The voice of one saying, C‘I'y.
And one said, What shall I cry?
All flesh is grass, and all the good;
liness thereof is as the flower of the
field.

7 The grass withereth, the flow-
er fadeth, because the breath of
Jehovah bloweth upon. it; surely
the people is grass.

8 The grass withereth, the flower
fadeth; but the word of our GOd
shall stand forever.

9 O thou that tellest good tidings
to Zion, get thee up on a high
mountain; 0 thou that tellest good
tidings to Jerusalem, lift up thy
voice with strength; lift it up, be
not afraid; say unto the cities of
Judah, Behold, your God!

10 Behold, the Lord Jehovah will
come as a mighty one, and his arm
will rule for him: Behold, his re-
ward is with him, and his recom-
pense before him.

11 He will feed his flock like a.
shepherd, he will gather the lambs
in his arm, and carry them in his
bosom, and will gently lead those
that have their young.

20 Isaiah liii. 1:12.

1 Who hath believed our mes-
sage? and to whom hath the arm of
Jehovah been revealed?

2 For he grew up before him as
a tender plant, and as a root out of
a dry ground: he hath no form nor
comeliness; and when we see him,
there is no beauty that we should
desire him.

3 He was despised, and rejected
of men; a man of sorrows, and ac-
quainted with grief: and as one
from whom men hide their face he

was despised; and we esteemed him
not. ‘ .

4 Surely he 'hath borne our griefs,
and carried our sorrows; yet we
did esteem him stricken, smitten
of God, and afflicted.

5 But he was wounded for our
transgressions, he was bruised for
our iniquities; the chastisement of
our peace was upon him; and with
his stripes we are healed.

6 All we like sheep have gone
astray; we have turned every one
to his own way; and Jehovah hath
laid on him the iniquity of us all.

7 He was oppressed, yet when he
was afflicted he opened not his
mouth; as a lamb that is led to the
slaughter, and as a sheep that be-
fore its shearers is dumb, so he
opened not his mouth.

8 By oppression and judgment he
was taken away; and as for his
generation, who among them con-
sidered that he was cut off out of
the land of the living for the trans-
gression of my people to whom the
stroke was due?

9 And they made his grave with
the wicked, and with a. rich man
in his death; although he had done
no violence, neither was any deceit
in his mouth.

10 Yet it pleased Jehovah to
bruise him; he hath put him to
grief: when thou shalt make his
soul an offering for sin, he shall
see his seed, he shall prolong his
days, and the pleasure of Jehovah
shall prOSper in his hand.

11 He shall see of the travail of
his soul, and shall be satisfied: by
the knowledge of himself shall my
righteous servant justify many;
and he shall bear their iniquities.

12 Therefore will I divide him a.
portion with the great, and he shall
divide the spoil with the strong;
because he poured out his soul unto
death, and was numbered with the
transgressors: yet he bare the sin.
of many, and made intercession for
the transgressors.

21 Isaiah 1v. 1:13.

1 Ho, every one that thirsteth,
come ye to the waters, and he that
hath no money; come ye, buy, and
eat; yea, come, buy Wine and milk
without money and without price.

2 Wherefore do ye spend money

for that which is not bread? and
your labor for that which satisfieth
not? hearken diligently unto me,
and eat ye that which is good, and
let your soul delight itself in fat-
ness.

3 Incline your ear, and come unto
me; hear, and your soul shall live:
and I will make an everlasting
covenant with you, even the sure
mercies of David.

4 Behold, I have given him for
a witness to the peoples, a leader
and commander to the peoples.

5 Behold, thou shall call a nation
that thou knowest not; and a na-
tion that knew not thee shall run
unto thee, because of Jehovah thy
God, and for the Holy One of
Israel; for he hath glorified thee.

6 Seek ye Jehovah while he may
be found; call ye upon him while
he is near:

7 Let the wicked forsake his
way; and the un'righteous man his
thoughts; and let him return unto
Jehovah, and he will have mercy
upon him; and to our God, for he
will abundantly pardon.

8 For my thoughts are not your
thoughts, neither are your Ways
my ways, saith Jehovah.

9 For as the heavens are higher
than the earth, so are my ways
higher than your ways, and my
thoughts-than your thoughts.

10 For as the rain cometh down
and the snow from heaven, and re-
turneth not thither, but watereth
the earth, and maketh it bring
forth and bud, and giveth seed
to the sower and bread to the
eater;

11 So shall my word be that
goeth forth out of my mouth: it
shall not return unto me void, but
it shall accomplish that which I
please, and it shall prosper in the
thing whereto I sent it.

12 For ye shall go out with joy,
and be led forth with peace: the
mountains and the hills shall break
forth before you into singing; and
all the trees of the field shall clap
their hands.

13 Instead of the thorn shall
come up the fir-tree; and instead
of the brier shall come up the myr-
tle-tree: and it shall be to Jehovah
for a name, for an everlasting sign
that shall not be out off.

SERMON ON THE MOUNT.
2 2 Matt. v. 342.

3 Blessed are the poor in Spirit:
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn:
for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek:
they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they that hunger
and thirst after righteousness: for
they shall be filled.

7 Blessed are the merciful:
they shall 'obtain mercy.

8 Blessed' are the pure in heart:
for they shall see God.

9 Blessed are the peacemakers:
for they shall be called sons of God.

10 Blessed are they that have
been persecuted for righteousness’
sake: for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.

11 Blessed are ye when men shall
reproach you, and persecute you,
and say all manner of evil against
you falsely, for my sake.

12 Rejoice, and be exceeding
glad: for great is your reward in
heaven: for so persecuted they the
prophets that were before you.

23 Matt. v. 13:16, 38=48.

13 Ye are the salt of the earth:
but if the salt have lost its savor,
wherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but
to be cast out and trodden under
foot of men.

14 Ye are the light of the world.
A city set on a hill cannot be hid.

15 Neither do men light a lamp,
and put it under the bushel, but on '
the stand; and it shineth unto all
that are in the house.

16 Even so let your light shine
before men; that they may see
your good works, and glorify your
Father who is in heaven.

38 Ye have heard that
said, An eye for an eye,
tooth for a tooth:

39 But I say unto you, Resist not
him that is evil: but whosoever
smiteth thee on thy right cheek,
turn to him the other also.

40 And if any man would go to
law with thee, and take away thy
coat, let him have thy cloak also.

41 And whosoever shall compel
thee to go one mile, go with him

43 Ye have heard that it was
said, Thou shalt love thy neighbor,
and hate thine enemy:

44 But I say unto you, Love your
enemies, and pray for them that
persecute you;

45 That ye may be sons of your
Father who is in heaven: for he
maketh his sun to rise on the evil
and the good, and sendeth rain on
the just and the unjust.

46 For if ye love them that love
you,,what reward have ye? do not
even the publicans the same?

47 And if ye salute your brethren
only, what do ye more than others?
do not even the Gentiles the same?

48 Ye therefore shall be perfect,
as your heavenly Father is perfect.

24- Matt. vi. 545, 19:23.

5 And when ye pray, ye shall not
be as the hypocrites: for they love
to stand and pray in the syna-
gogues and in the corners of the
streets, that they may be seen of
men. Verily I say unto you, They
have received their reward.

6 But thou, when th-Ou prayest,
enter'into thine inner chamber,
and having shut thy door, pray to
thy Father who is in secret, and
thy Father who seeth in secret
shall recompense thee.

7 And in praying use not vain
repetitions, as the Gentiles do: for
they think that they shall be heard
for their much speaking.

8 Be not therefore like unto
them: for your Father knoweth
what things ye have need of, before
ye ask him. .

9 After this manner therefore
pray ye: Our Father who art in
heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will
be done, as in heaven, so on earth.

11 Give us this day our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts, as
we also" have forgiven Our debtors.

13 And bring us not into temp-
tation, but deliver us from the evil one.

14 For if ye forgive men their
trespasses, your heavenly Father
will also forgive you.

15 But if ye forgive not men
their trespasses, neither will your
Father forgive your trespasses.

19 Lay not up for yourselves
treasures upon the earth, where
moth and rust consume, and where
thieves break through and steal:

20 But lay up for yourselves
treasures in heaven, where neither
moth nor rust doth consume, and
where thieves do not break through
nor steal:

21 For where thy treasure is,
there will thy heart be also.

22 The lamp of the body is the
eye: if therefore thine eye be
single, thy whole body shall be full
of light.

23 But if thine eye be evil, thy
whole body shall be full of dark-
ness. If: therefore the light that is
in thee be darkness, how great is
the darkness! ~

25 Matt. vii. 1:27.

1 Judge not, that ye be not
judged.

2 For with what judgment ye
judge, ye shall be judged: and with
what measure ye mete, it shall be
measured unto you.

3 And why be-holldest thou the
mote that is in thy brother’s eye,
but considerest not the beam that
is in thine own eye?
