Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Monday Club is a women's club formed September 1950 at the home of Dr. Winona Stevens Jones in Lexington, Ky. The concept was based on the Monday Afternoon Club founded in 1887 in Louisville, Ky., by Sarah Short Barnes. Members research papers on a topic of their choosing and present them at Club meetings. The Monday Club Memorial Fund was established in 1980 to provide donations to public libraries for purchasing books in memory of deceased Club members. The Club meets eight times a year on the third Monday of the month from February through June and September through November.
- Scope and Content
- The Monday Club Records ( dated 1981-2012; 0.88 cubic feet; 3 boxes) comprises incoming correspondence to club presidents, including Ann Asbury (1989-2011); club records (membership lists, club histories, and lists of papers given (1981-2012); and papers presented at the meetings (1990s-2000s). Paper topics include history and religion. Correspondence topics include thank you letters for donations, especially to the University of Kentucky and Transylvania University; notes from members requesting emeritus status or resigning membership; and thank you notes for condolence and get well cards.
