Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Anne MacKinnon is a Wyoming-based environmental activist with research interests in land use, water legislation and management, and coal and oil resources. She worked as a researcher for the book division of the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1973 and 1975, where she undertook a project to investigate the history of coal in Kentucky for a coffee table book. The Courier-Journal ultimately canceled its sponsorship of MacKinnon's research project and her book on Kentucky coal was never published.
- In addition to her work for the Louisville Courier-Journal, MacKinnon also worked as a correspondent for Whitesburg, Kentucky's Mountain Eagle. She received her J.D. in 1981 from the University of California, Berkeley and her Ph.D. in 2014 from the Division of Resource Economics at Humboldt University. MacKinnon is now an adjunct professor at the Helga Otto Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming and a consultant for natural resource policy education and outreach.
- Scope and Content
- The Anne MacKinnon coal research files (dated 1866-1977, undated; 3.23 cubic feet; 1 record carton, 11 shoe boxes, 1 oversize box, 1 oversize folder) comprise photographs, research notes, grey literature, and reports that document the former Kentucky journalist's research for an unpublished book on coal and its impact on Appalachia and Kentucky communities.
