Biography / History
A native of Beattyville, Kentucky, Betty Carolyn Congleton (1925-2002) was a graduate of Maryville College, Tennessee, and received her masters and PhD degrees in history from the University of Kentucky. She taught at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky, before joining the history faculty first at Memphis State University and then East Carolina University. Her research interests included Appalachian history; George D. Prentice (1802-1870), editor of the Louisville Journal; and Edward O. Guerrant (1838-1916), a Confederate Army officer, physician, and Presbyterian missionary.

Congleton's papers include personal and professional correspondence as well as research notes regarding her research on George D. Prentice, Edward O. Guerrant, and Appalachian history.

Correspondence from Mary Quillen from Heidelberg, Kentucky. Personal papers as well as papers that pertain to Betty Congleton’s grandfather, Isaac Congleton, and other family members.
