- Biography / History
- A native of Beattyville, Kentucky, Betty Carolyn Congleton (1925-2002) was a graduate of Maryville College, Tennessee, and received her masters and PhD degrees in history from the University of Kentucky. She taught at Lafayette High School in Lexington, Kentucky, before joining the history faculty first at Memphis State University and then East Carolina University. Her research interests included Appalachian history; George D. Prentice (1802-1870), editor of the Louisville Journal; and Edward O. Guerrant (1838-1916), a Confederate Army officer, physician, and Presbyterian missionary.

- The Betty Congleton papers (dated 1756-2006; 16 cubic feet; 37 boxes) consist of research files, correspondence, photographs, newspaper clippings, diplomas, and memorabilia pertaining to Betty Congleton's career as a historian. Congleton's papers include personal and professional correspondence as well as research notes regarding her research on George D. Prentice, Edward O. Guerrant, and Appalachian history.
