- Wendell Hampton Ford (September 8, 1924 – January 22, 2015) was born in Daviess County, Kentucky to Ernest M. and Irene Woolfork Ford. He attended the University of Kentucky from 1942 to 1943, leaving in 1944 to enlist in the army for service in World War II. He married Jean Neel on September 18, 1943 and they had two children – Shirley and Steven. After an honorable discharge in 1946, Ford returned home and graduated from the Maryland School of Insurance in 1947 to work with his father in the family insurance business. In 1949 he enlisted in the Kentucky Army National Guard serving actively until 1956 when he transferred to the inactive guard and then was discharged in 1962. Ford was active in civic affairs early on; he was the first Kentuckian president of the Jaycees in 1954, youth chairman of Bert T. Combs' gubernatorial campaign in 1959, and then Combs' executive assistant from 1959 to 1963.
- In 1965 Ford ran as a Democrat for the Kentucky State Senate after being asked to by then Governor Ned Breathitt, beating Casper Gardner by a narrow margin to represent the Eighth District which included Daviess and Hancock counties. In 1967 Ford decided to independently run for Lieutenant Governor, winning the primary by another narrow margin, and won the general election while the Democratic nominee for governor, Henry Ward, lost to Republican Louie B. Nunn. While lieutenant governor he helped to rebuild the state's Democratic machine that helped him, among others, be elected.
- In 1971 Ford made the decision to run for governor, against seven other candidates in the Democratic gubernatorial primary including Albert Chandler and his mentor Bert Combs. Ford won the general election and quickly began to reorganize executive departments and create a budget surplus for the state. Achievements during his tenure include increasing taxes on coal, gasoline, and corporations while exempting food from sales tax to increase the state's revenue. He expanded the state's education budget, applied funds to various construction projects across the commonwealth, and pushed for a six-year study on coal gasification and liquefaction after the 1973 oil crisis. Following his term as governor, Ford decided to challenge the republican incumbent Marlow Cook and won the 1974 election to the United States Senate.
- His senatorial tenure spanned four consecutive terms, from 1974 to his retirement in 1999. He served on a variety of committees while in the Senate, including the Committee on Aeronautical and Space Sciences, the Select Committee to Study the Committee System, the Commerce Committee, and the Committee on Rules and Administration as well as forming the Senate National Guard Caucus to advance the National Guard's capabilities and readiness. From 1991 to 1995, he served as the Majority Whip, and then the Minority Whip from 1995 to 1999. Achievements in the Senate include defending Kentucky's cash crop, tobacco, by exempting it from the Consumer Product Safety Act, opposing cigarette tax increases, sponsoring an amendment that would limit the amount of foreign tobacco imported by the United States, and working to improve airports and airlines across Kentucky and the nation. One piece of legislation is named for Ford, the Wendell H. Ford Aviation Investment and Reform Act for the 21st century which is aimed at reducing aircraft noise, improving airline safety measures, and required airlines to better inform consumers about their performance which was signed into law on April 5, 2000.
- Upon his retirement from the senate in 1999, he was the longest-serving senator in Kentucky history, serving for a total of 24 years. He was an inductee to the Kentucky Transportation Center Hall of fame in 2008 for his service to bettering the state's transportation infrastructure. In 2014, he was diagnosed with lung cancer and passed away from the disease on January 22, 2015.

- The Owensboro Museum of Science and History collection on Wendell Ford (dated 1931-1998, undated; 11.13 cubic feet; 36 boxes, 1 folder, 1 item) primarily comprises correspondence, campaign material, event materials, memorabilia, photographs, scrapbooks, a photograph album, films, and other materials that document Wendell H. Ford's tenures as lieutenant governor, governor, and United States senator of Kentucky. Also included in the collection are materials pertaining to Ford, Ford's family and friends, and Ford's involvement with the United States Jaycees. This material was originally loaned by the Ford family to the Owensboro Museum of Science and History. In 2018, it was transferred by the family to the University of Kentucky Libraries.

The Correspondence series consists of correspondence regarding politics, holidays, events, thank you cards, Ford's birthday, and general topics sent by various people including politicians such as Presidents Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, ca. 1968-1998 and undated. Of particular interest is correspondence from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (1984), George Bush regarding a vote to aid Egypt (1990), the Close Up Foundation (1984, includes photograph), and the Owensboro Symphony (1997, includes a photograph). This series is arranged chronologically.

The Campaign Material sub-series primarily consists of committee materials; committee member information; information on campaign workers; expenses and contributions; campaign events; invitations; correspondence; Ford speeches on issues such as strip mining, pollution, a severance tax, drug abuse, campus dissatisfaction, participation in government and party, education, and law enforcement; poll numbers; Kentucky voter registration numbers; district numbers; schedules; reports; advertisement designs; advertisements; newspaper clippings; and expenses and contributions, 1970-1971. The Events and Awards sub-series consists of an invitation to a breakfast by the Owensboro Tourist Commission, a Commodore in the Fall of the Ohio River Navy commission, and documents pertaining to planning for the State Government Day, 1972-1974. The Other Gubernatorial Documents sub-series contains a Kentucky government directory and governor's staff assistants directory, a speech given by Ford to the Jaycees, and newspaper clippings on Ford's inauguration and a gasoline tax, 1968-1974 and undated. Several photographs have related correspondence and notes stored with them. The Ford Family and Friends Photographs sub-series consists of photographs of the Ford, family, and friends from ca. 1938-1959 and undated. Those shown in the photographs include Bob Salyers, E.M. Ford, Irene Ford, Betty John Ford, Don Neel, Jean Ford, Ford's grandfather, Ford's daughter Shirley Ford, Reyburn, Grandmother Minerva Ford, the Schenk family (Jean Ford's family), and Mrs. Carden. Scope and Contents
The Senatorial Tenure series comprises material related to senatorial campaigns, events, presidential inaugurations, the Middle East delegation on nuclear proliferation, and publications and directories, as well as miscellaneous documents, 1946-1997 and undated. The Campaign Material sub-series consists primarily of information on campaign staff, schedules, committee meetings, events, workers for events, staff information, campaign committee workers, mailing lists, a 1974 campaign manual, and newspaper clippings, 1974-1991 and undated. The Events sub-series contains invitations and pamphlets for a democratic convention, the centennial safe opening ceremonies, a Magna Carta presentation ceremony, Reach Out and Touch presented by the Harrodsburg Baptist Church youth choir, the vice chairman's dinner honoring the 1980 Corporate Affairs Conference, a reception for Ford, a centennial picnic, and the dedication of the old senate chamber, 1976-1986. The Inauguration Materials sub-series primarily consists of programs, invitations, a guide, maps, inauguration event invitations, tickets, and correspondence relating to the presidential inaugurations of Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and Bill Clinton, 1967-1997. Most of the inauguration correspondence relates to the inauguration of George H. W. Bush. The Middle East Delegation on Nuclear Proliferation sub-series primarily comprises schedules, memorandums, reports, correspondence, briefings, documents related to the topic of nuclear proliferation, passport and visa applications, cassette tapes, a delegation report to the senate on security and foreign policy interests per senate resolution 523, and Ministry of Electricity and Energy documents, 1971-1977 and undated. The Other Documents sub-series contains material on the Brescia College speech and hearing program; certificates and honors given to Ford from various Kentucky and national organizations; a commemorative pen of the signing of the S. 2401 for the establishment of home insulation safety standards; drawings of Ford; Ford's statements, addresses, correspondence, and press releases regarding busing, daylight savings time, energy, NASA research and technology, the Cambodia military support amendment, and gun control issues; political cartoons; health documents such as quarantine posters and a pamphlet on scarlet fever; Ford and Jean name cards; and Ford's honorary member card for the United States Senate Staff Club, 1975-1980 and undated. The Publications and Directories sub-series contains Democracy Versus Monarchism by Horace Marcus Coffey; Democratic Review, 1976 July-August; Stadium Concerts Review, vol. XXIX no. 1, 1946 June 17; and a United States Senate telephone directory, 1946-1979. The Senatorial Tenure series is arranged alphabetically by subject or format and thereunder alphabetically or chronologically.
