By Becky Heisel

To a senior. graduation day
signals the end of a long journey.
and the beginning of an even
longer one.

Some are finding it hard to be-
gin the journey after college because
they do not have jobs lined up.

Larry Grabau. an agronomy
professor and advisor for the Col-
lege of Agriculture. said that if a
person starts a job search after
graduation. they might not find a
job for two to six months.

“The biggest advantage to do,
ing a pregraduation job search is
the overlap of all the built-in

v

waiting periods it takes to get
hired," he said.

Unfortunately. the wait for a
job is usually unpaid.

“Many people do not have the
financial luxury to go without in-
come.“ said Ashley Moore. assis-
tant director of the Career Center.

Bob Heath. associate profes-
sor and advisor in electrical engi-
neering. said that he normally ad~
Vises his students to begin their
job search at the beginning of the se-
mester they are to graduate.

“Most students. from a finan-
cial standpoint. want a job so
they can go ahead and start earn»
ing an income." he said.

Heath added that a first job is

V

not the end of life ~ one can always
find another job after having a little
experience under their belt.

“Go out. get your first job.
and after a few years look around
at your options. See if something
else will suit you better." he said.

A person should keep in
mind. however. that a history of
too many moves looks bad on re-
sumes. Heath cautioned,

Some new graduates are not
worried about finding what they
want to do. but rather where they
can find a job doing it.

“If you know what you want
to do. perhaps it is more impor-
tant to go somewhere where they
do that. rather than set geograph-

ical boundaries for yourself."
Grabau said

Though advisors and career
counselors all agree that a gradu»
ate would be better off to find a
job before graduation. some stu
dents disagree.

“There is so much to explore of
what you want." said Rob Bricken. an
English and secondary education senior.
“There are so many opportunities out
there jobs are not immediately neces-
sary."

Sharon (‘hilds. assistant direc‘
tor of the (‘areer (‘entetz said that
many graduates seem to think that
there is plenty of time after gradua-
tion to get a job

Graduation doesn't have to be goodbye

Keeping in touch: UK's Alumni Association offers graduating seniors a chance to stay connected with their beloved alma mater

By Becky Helsel
STAFF WRITER

After all the celebrations are over,
the pictures developed and the pre-
sents opened, the realization that the
graduates are truly out on their own
may seem harsh.

No longer do they have the choice

the Alumni Association is that it keeps
you connected to the University. It
keeps you advised with the publica-
tions on alumni and events." said Peg-
gy Collins, marketing and membership
director of the Alumni Association.

For the graduate who yearns to re-
turn to their college roots. the associa-
tion can get them involved again.

they cannot get football tickets like
they used to since it has become so

Homecoming is always a big

is trying to do even more.

stress of finals a swift kick in the rear end

By Jennifer Allseuskes
CONIRIBUYING WRITER

As the school year draws to
a close, many students find
dead week and finals week to be
a continuous nightmare filled
with blurred vision and endless
worries about grades.

Dead week is supposed to
mean downtime from classes so
students can study and reduce the
pressure they feel during finals.

Yet. many students find them-
selves with presentations. papers
and semester projects all due dur-
ing dead week, leaving no time to
study for finals in advance.

Engineering senior Matt
Thompson knows the feeling well.
“At the end of dead week i have a
50-hour project due. then I turn
around and have a whole week of
finals.“ he said.

“1 end up feeling over-
whelmed and like I am not go-
ing to get everything done."
Thompson said.

“There are a lot of presenta-
tions and studying for a lot finals
during the last two weeks," said
Katrina St.Clair, a biology senior.

The stress caused by the
sometimes-overwhelming work-
load can cause more than just
mental anguish.

Dr. Scott VanMeter. a fami-
ly practice physician at Good
Samaritan Hospital. said
stressed students may experi
ence symptoms such as fatigue,
sleeplessness. upset stomach.
short emotional fuse. lack of
hunger and irritability.

For students who are feeling
the tension as the semester draws
to a close. VanMeter offered ways
of dealing with the pressure.

Relaxation techniques like
exercise and soothing music
work. Plus. identifying the prob-
lem. breaking it down. and deal-
ing with it one part at a time is
also helpful, he said.

Taking periodic breaks
from work helps to clear the
mind and cut down on stress.
VanMeter said.

It is also a good idea to talk
problems out. said VanMeter.

“Students can talk to fami-
ly. friends, student health at
UK. or even professional coun-
selors,“ he said.

However. VanMeter warns
that students should not turn to
alcohol or drugs as an answer
to stress.

“Many times. these things
will make the problems worse
because you are not getting any-
thing done. you're just putting off

with the stress of finals.

“instead of staying up all
night and trying to study, it‘s
better if I go to sleep for at least
a couple of hours," Thompson
said. “My mind is more clear
after a few hours of sleep.“

For others. having a little bit
of fun helps when trying to relax.

"I find that escaping for a few
hours by going to the movies with
a friend is helpful in clearing my
mind," St.Clair said.

No matter what methods
students decide to take in re-
lieving their stress, they can
keep in mind that it will all be
over in one short week.

"clitoral“

1. Identify the problem and deal
with it.

2. Use common relaxation tech-
niques (exercise. V093).

3. Talk about your problems with
someone.

4. Have self-confidence and self-
esteem.

5. Study more: allow more time
for studying.

6. Have breaks in your studying;
get away from it for a while.

Kernel staffer offers post-graduation advice

By Matt Mulcahey

EsTstiiit 5cm mos“

When I take my last final
this 'l‘hursday it will bring to
an end tny lth year of college.
And to answer the question
that you and all of my relatives
are asking: no. daintnit. I'm not
graduating.

Why? I don‘t know I just
didn't get it done in time. (let
off tny back.

Actually. I'm pretty thank-
ful I didn't graduate. I have no
idea what the hell I want to do
with my life. In fact. I'm more
confused about it now then
when I arrived.

Despite my failure to gain
my diploma. I‘ve been asked by
the higher-ups to write those of
you who are getting out of here
a little story.

So I figured I'd do a little
hypothesizing about what I'd do
if I were graduating.

Here‘s a few scores I‘d like
to settle and some advice on
the future from someone who
doesn‘t really know what he's
talking about.

Avoid getting a real job

Yes. sooner or later you'll
probably have to get a regular
nine to five job.

Avoid it like the plague.

Take a vacation first. Get in
your car and be Peter Fonda
from Easy Rider (the hallucina-
tory drugs. of course. are op-
tional).

Maybe if you drive fast
enough you can actually outrun
adult responsibilities. I'd sure like
to try.

I was also thinking about a
nice. minor work-related injury to
postpone the inevitable.

I‘m an accounting major
though. so unless I get the mother
of all paper cuts that's not looking
too promising.

Tell off that professor
you hated

Chances are you‘ve had at
least one teacher you feel short~
changed you. Mine was a cer-

tain HOT 101 professor who
will remain nameless

To be fair. this guy didn't like
me either. l had the class MWF at
8 am. and every day I‘d walk in to
my front row seat at 811“. livery
day I‘d hear "class starts at ll atti.
Father Mulcahey."

I think I was the oIll\ one
who knew he was talking about
the priest from .1I*.Al*8*H. but ap
parently he thought it was funny

Due mainly to my poor at-
tendance grade, I wasn‘t doing
too well going into the final. So
l studied harder for that test
than I ever had before or since.

Five hundred definitions I
sifted through and memorized. I
knew more about management
than anyone should ever have to.

I kicked that tests ass.
When I got my grade report I‘d
brought my grade up to a 79.5
He gave me a (‘.

So to that teacher who‘ll re-
main nameless. I'd just like to
say I‘ve got your Father Mulca-
hey right here.

Get revenge on the park-
inq people

These guy s have been
sticking it to me for four years.
and I think it‘s time they get a
little taste of their own medi»
cine.

Just one example of their
many heinous acts was perpe-
trated on me last semester.

I‘d been parking in the lot
next to the Sig lip house for
over a month without any prob-
lems Nothing. Not so much as
one ticket.

I left my last final in a par
ticularly grand mood. I was
done for the semester and I‘d
just gotten 880 from Kennedy's
for my books. which is consid-
erably less of a screwing than
I‘m accustomed to.

I get back to the lot to head
home. and my car‘s gone. Towed.

After nearly a month of noth—
ing. they decided to tow cars from
the lot during finals week.

Pure meaness is the only
reason I can think of. or maybe

to squeeze a few last dollars out
of me.

In all. I've been towed three
times anti gotten too many tick-
ets to count.

I'm thinking I should get
some yellow paint. do a little Da
Vinci job on the curbs and get
all of the parking patrollers‘
cars towed. That. my friend.
would bejustice.

Throw a party, and if you
haven't been arrested

before, do so

Don‘t do anything violent
or dangerous. and don‘t commit
any felonies. Just an act of
childish. immature. stupidity.

Walk naked into Tallyho‘s
and order some food. Fill that
crater in the middle of campus
with water and go for a swim.

Do something creative. A
little misdemeanor won‘t kill
you. Everyone should have a
“the time I got arrested story."

And when I say throw a
party. I mean throw a party. In
fact. party probably isn‘t even
the right word. Ilrunken orgy.
Yeah. That's better.

And don't just get a couple
of kegs. Fill a pick-up bed full of
beer. Make sortie Beam-cicles.

To be honest with you.
Beam-cicles are just a pipe
dream. I found out the hard
way. Alchohol won't freeze. so
Beam-cicles can never be.

So that‘s it. my grand
schemes for if and when I final-
ly do graduate. Here's some last
gems of wisdom.

Have one last fling of irre-
sponsibility before succumbing
to the grind of “the real world."
Throw caution to the wind.
You‘ve got the rest of your life
to be tepid.

Youth is fleeting and every
year of your life will go faster
than the last. Although you
can‘t stop it. try. The older you
get the more the days seem to
blend together and become in-
distinguishable from the last.

Don‘t let them. Don‘t take
yourself too seriously. And never.
ever lose your sense of humor.

(iood luck.
