- Biography / History
- Paul R. Foster was born in Glasgow, Kentucky, January 13, 1926. He enlisted in the army in August 1943 and was commander of the courtroom guard at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials during 1945-1946. The prisoners were in the custody of the guard during trial proceedings. After his guard service was completed, he studied Commerce at the University of Kentucky from fall 1947 through spring 1949, returning as a junior in 1951. From April to September 1949, Foster returned to active duty, serving with the Seventh Infantry Division in Japan. Foster married Caroline Walker in 1949. He died in a car crash on August 7, 1964.

- Scope and Content
- The Paul R. Foster papers (dated 1946-1951, 0.96 cubic feet; 4 boxes) consist of copies of indictments, photograps of the tribunal in session and of the defendants and a copy of the verdict as well as a prepared summary of the German War Criminal Trial at Nuremburg in 1945-1946. The indictment covers the history of the Nazi's party's control in Germany and Nazi aggression and details methods of extermination, torture and slave labor, devastation and other crimes. Foster collected the signatures of all the defendant's in the trial including those sentenced to death: Hermann Goering, Joachim von Ribbentrop, Wilheim Keitel, Dr. Ernst Kaltenbrunner, Alfred Rosenberg, Hans Frank, Wilheim Frick, Julius Streicher, Fritz Sauckel, Alfred Seyss-Inquart. In the collection is a separate certification for each signature to verify that it is a true one. The photographs were gathered into an album by Charles W. Alexander, director of photography for the trial. Also included in the collection are the books published using Charles W. Alexander's photographs.
