- Biography / History
- Marvin Slung (1928-2014) was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Charles M. Slung (1901-1975), a dry-goods businessman and Ruth Silverman (1906-1974) and attended a business college in Miami, Florida from late 1946 to early 1947. Lois Simons (1927-2011) was born in Louisville, Kentucky to Robert Simons (1899-1979), a restauranteur, and Dorothy R. Simons (1906-1999) and attended the University of Louisville from late 1946 to early 1947. Martin and Lois were dating long-distance as each pursued their own educational interests, communicating by letters and phone calls. Due to mostly missing Lois, Marvin transferred to the University of Louisville in March 1947. The couple married shortly afterwards and had three children: Hilton (1950-2009), Larry, and Melissa.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Marvin and Lois Slung letters (dated 1946-1947; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box, 7 folders) comprise letters from Marvin to Lois that document their long-distance relationship and college educations post-World War II. The letters commonly discuss his love for Lois and desire to marry her, his homesickness, college life, and family life.
- The Marvin and Lois Slung letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
