Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- Fayette County, Kentucky, opened the Blue Grass Sanatorium, a treatment center for tuberculosis, in 1917. Leo Marks donated $125,000 to the county to construct and equip new facilities for the hospital in 1924. The Sanatorium was renamed in honor of his father, Julius. The opening of five state tuberculosis hospitals in 1948 caused the number of patients at Julius Marks to decline. The sanatorium's patients eventually transferred to the state hospitals and Julius Marks became a home for the elderly and indigent of Fayette County.
- Scope and Content
- The Julius Marks Sanatorium records comprise correspondence, legal papers, hospital care studies, annual reports, and inventory lists regarding the operation of the Julius Marks Sanatorium from 1955-1962. A bound volume contains minutes from the Board of Trustees meetings and letters from hospital officials. The "Legal papers" folder relates to the closing of the Sanatorium.
