Dean E. Knavel ffl
I Vegetable variety trials are conducted annually by the University of Kentucky [ _ t`
Department of Horticulture at the University experimental farms, to evaluate _' . _
varieties and breeding lines best adapted to Kentucky climate and soils. The » iv
varieties and breeding lines are evaluated in respect to yield, fruit, and plant char- ; ` ‘
acteristics. 1 Y
The trials are of either a replicated or observational type, and data are 3
obtained on the potentiality of each variety for recommendation to commercial and · . _»
home garden growers. If the varieties and breeding lines perform favorably in the
observational trials, they are given thorough testing in replicated trials for several . _
years before being recommended. Many of the entries are breeding lines and are · j I
listed by number rather than by variety. If the breeding line is not eventually named .
as a variety, seed of it will not be available to growers. In some cases numbers _ — » ·_
indicate commercial hybrids, of which seed is available.
The vegetables tested in 1962, 1963, and 1964 were field and greenhouse I 1
tomatoes, snapbeans, polebeans, sweetcorn, Irish potatoes, okra, and pickle I
cucumbers. All replicated plots were located at Lexington. Plots for sweetcorn, p
snapbeans, Irish potatoes, okra, and cucumbers were 50 feet long. The tomato plots _. t_ .·
consisted of 10 plants per plot spaced 3x4 feet in the plot. The polebean plots were 100 feet long. I K
Following is the list of concerns as sources of seed for the varieties and
breeding lines used in the trials: , n U
