Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- The Headley family, was prominent in Kentucky society beginning in the mid-nineteenth century. James Headley (b. 1768) and Jane Elizabeth Patterson (b. 1764) married in 1790 and had a total of 11 children. By the turn of the nineteenth century the family had relocated to Kentucky. James S. Headley (1792-1884), son of James and Jane, married Malinda Atchinson in 1825 and had four sons, including James Alexander Headley (1831-1912) who received a law degree from Transylvania University and was valedictorian of his class. He married Fanny Carter in 1852 and relocated to Atchinson, Kansas until tensions over the Civil War caused the family to leave and eventually return to Lexington. In the 1870s James Alexander began his 18-year tenure as Clerk of the Fayette Circuit Court. One son of James and Fanny, James Carter Headley (1860-1890), made his living in Lexington as a real estate developer. Headley Avenue in Lexington is named after him. James and Jane Headley other son, Marshall Headley (1808-1866) married Margaret Farra (1821-1906) and established Allendale farm in 1852 in Jessamine County. Their son Charles William Headley, Sr. (1839-1920) managed Allendale and became a prominent standard bred horse breeder and farmer. Charles Sr.'s son, Oscar Farra Headley (1884-1953) and grandson Charles William Headley, Jr. (1906-1986) both managed Allendale upon inheriting the farm. Charles William Headley, Jr. never married and left behind no descendants. The Bassett and Lee families are predominantly ancestors of the Headley family, connecting to the family as early as the 1810s; the Garr family connects to the Headley's via the marriage of Charles Crain Garr (1884-1957) to Elisabeth Higgins Headley (1885-1961) in 1921. The Pettit family, which includes former Lexington mayor H. Foster Pettit, connects through Pettit's great-aunt Nancy Pettit who married George W. Headley in the mid-nineteenth century.
- Scope and Content
- The Headley, Garr, Bassett, Lee papers (1810-2004, undated; 2.01 cubic feet; 18 boxes, 3 items) consists of diaries, correspondence, ephemera, and photographs that document members of the Headley, Garr, Bassett, Lee, and Pettit families of Lexington and Central Kentucky. The Family Records series consists of diaries, ledgers, family genealogies, correspondence, scrapbooks, and newspaper clippings that document the activities of the various family members and their travels. There several printed items that probably belonged to Charles Crain Garr and relates his service in the Barrow Unit, along with his work as a surgeon in Lexington in the early twentieth century. The collection includes a diary by Charles W. Headley from 1917, along with multiple diaries written by his mother Margaret Farra Headley Bryan. The materials belonging to his father Marshall Headley includes financial and farm ledgers relating to Allendale farm. The Photographs series consists of multiple photograph albums and portraits created by the families as well as a collection of cigarett cards mainly depicting actresses from the late 1800s through the early 1900s.
