Collection Overview

Biography / History
Lawrence H. Platt (1900-1973) was born in Wells County, Indiana to John Frederick Platt (1872-1949) and Saloma Ann Leavengood (1873-1939). In 1916, he married Mary Magdalene Allen (1898-1918) and together they had one child, Evangeline (1917-1998). In 1923, he married a second time to Forrest Mahalia Woods (1901-1988) and together they had one child, Clella (1925-2020). Lawrence owned and operated his own farm and worked as the bus driver for the local schools.
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Lawrence H. Platt diaries (dated 1960-1974; 0.18 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprises three diaries that document the daily life of Lawrence H. Platt while living and working in Markle, Indiana in the mid-twentieth century. The diaries detail Lawrence's work as a farmer and school bus driver, feeding and caring for cattle and pigs, selling the livestock, upkeep around his farm, taking care of school bus, and checking on road conditions. He also details the daily weather, visits from friends and family, going to town for healthcare, trips taken, personal health, and the deaths of family members.
The Lawrence H. Platt diaries collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
