- Biography / History
- Originally known as the Stearns Coal and Lumber Company, the Stearns Coal Company, was founded by Justus S. Stearns in the early 1900's in Stearns, (McCreary County) Ky. Stearns was active politically and owned and operated many businesses in Kentucky and surrounding states. Stearns, Ky. was the site of a bitter and often violent strike by miners over issues of mine safety and benefits.
- Scope and Content
- This collection consists of information on the Stearns Coal Strike in McCreary County, Ky. from July, 1976 to May, 1979. Materials include news articles about the history of the Stearns Coal Company and the Justus Mine in local, regional and national publications. Also present are handbills, posters and other items relating to the strike. Information is provided on the Blue Diamond Coal Company as well as its subsidiary, the Stearns Mining Company.
