- Biography / History
- Mary Conrad (1932-1995) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to Dwight Maddux (1900-1977) and Katherine Gordon Williams (1906-1995). She was married to a man known as "Red", but divorced in the early 1950s. In 1957, she married a second time to James Conrad (1930-1976), an ex-pat who was living in Greece after finishing his service in the US Army.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Mary and Jim Conrad photograph album (dated 1957-1958; 0.46 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises one photograph album that documents the first year of Mary and Jim Conrad's marriage while living in Greece and Germany in the 1950s. The album includes photographs of their wedding, family members, day to day life, their home, trips they took, air bases they stayed at while Jim was on duty, pets, friends made, and events they went to. There are also notes from Mary describing their first year of marriage, a treasure hunt made for Jim, clippings of a letter sent to Mary's parents, programs, playbills, and telegrams sent between Jim and Mary.
- The Mary and Jim Conrad photograph album collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
