   PREFACE TO ATLAS.

Pursuant to the request of the late Major-General George H. Thomas, the accompanying maps, illustrating the operations of the Army of the Cumberland during the War of the Rebellion, have been compiled. Many of them were examined and approved by him before his death, and much of their value is due to his suggestions, and to information furnished ay him.

At his request, permission was granted me, by the Chief of Engineers United States Army, to consult and use all official data in the Topographical Engineer Office at headquarters Department of the Cumberland, deemed essential in the compilation of the maps. Permission was also granted me by General Thomas to freely consult all official reports, orders, letters, and telegrams pertaining to the operations of the Army of the Cumberland; also, to consult his private military journal. Circular letters, approved by him, were addressed to tbe corps, district, division, brigade, and to many of the regimental and post commanders, soliciting full information as to the operations of their respective commands.

The Topographical Engineer Staff of the Army of the Cumberland was organized under Captain N. Michler, United States Engineers, and subsequently brought to a high state of usefulness under Colonel W. E. Merrill, United States Engineers. It was the custom to assign to each brigade an acting engineer officer, with instructions to survey the lines of marches traversed, and the lines of works erected by the brigade, as well as its position on tbe fields of battle, and when possible,

the lines of works and position in its front held by the Confederate forces. The data thus obtained by the brigade engineers was transmitted to the division engineers, compiled and transmitted by them to the corps engineers, and in turn by them to the Chief Engineer of the Army of the Cumberland. At many of the posts, acting engineer officers were also stationed, who surveyed and mapped the adjacent country. At the close of the war, nearly all of the maps compiled and data gathered by the Confederate engineer officers were secured. Immediately subsequent to the close of the war, in compliance with the orders of the Chief of Engineers of the United States Army, I caused to be made, under my supervision, surveys of all of the lines of works erected by the United States and Confederate forces during the Atlanta campaign, as well as of some of the battle-fields, which had been but imperfectly surveyed on account of the hurried events of the war. Thus a vast amount of valuable data was accumulated in the Topographical Engineer Office at headquarters Department of the Cumberland. During five years I served as superintendent of that office, and through the permission granted me of consulting and using the data gathered, I have enjoyed peculiar advantages in the compilation of the accompanying maps. My desire and purpose has been to make them as nearly accurate as possible.

In this connection I desire to acknowledge the assistance rendered me by Michael Lynch, topographical draughtsman, in the mechanical execution of the maps.
