- Politician Clayton, who was born in Delaware, served in the U.S. Senate (1828-1836, 1845-1848) and as the U.S. Secretary of State 1849-1850. During his political career he was close friends with Henry Clay (before 1848) and an advisor to Governor of Kentucky J. J. Crittenden.
- Scope and Content
- A portion of the official correspondence of John Jordan Crittenden and Leslie Combs to John M, Clayton copied from the Clayton Papers for a study of Kentucky history. Contains letters from J. J. Crittenden and Leslie Combs about political issues of the day. The papers of J. J. Crittenden are on the first part of the reel. See also M-50 for Clayton Papers from the National Archives.
