The former B-29 pilot was regarded then as a tireless football laborer with great potential
as a coach. Ile gained his apprenticeship in the football coaching profession under three of
the games top strategists—Earl (Bed) Blaik of Army, Sid Cillman of Cincinnati and Paul
Bryant of Kentucky.
Dietzel was a candidate for the \Vildcat coaching job when Bryant moved to Texas A & M
in 1954 and made a successful bid the following year for the LSU position. Although the
Tigers won only three games in 1955 (one of them a 19-7 upset of UK), everyone in thc
Bayou country has become impressed with the youthful grid boss.
