Collection Overview

Biography / History
Arthur C. Wolf (1896-1973) was born in Kentucky to Edward J. Wolf (1869-1932) and Jennie M. Crandall (1869-1936). He enlisted in the US Army during World War I, and achieved the rank of Sergeant Major before attending Officer Training School and ultimately becoming a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army, turning his enlistment into a career. In 1919, Wolf married Louise Watkins (1901-1991), and together they had at least two children, Mildred (1919-2001) and Arthur Jr. (1920-1944).
American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
Scope and Content
The Arthur C. Wolf letters (dated 1911-1918, 1951, undated; 0.03 cubic feet; 2 folders) comprise letters from Arthur Wolf to his family members that document his military experience in Lexington, Kentucky during World War I. The majority of the letters are addressed to Wolf's mother. He wrote about arriving in Lexington, the housing situation for soldiers, the various courses he took, his selection to stay in the adjutants office, his aspiration to attend Officer Training School, support from various sergeants, and his promotions through the ranks to Sergeant Major. The 1951 letter concerns an issue of shipping a Christmas gift to Wolf that arrived damaged. Also included in the collection are letters between Arthur's father, Edward J. Wolf, and his wife and children while he worked in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. The letters discuss his job and his hopes for his children's futures.
The Arthur C. Wolf letters are part of the Wade Hall Collection of American letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
