Vols struggle with rhythm, Blue

Padgett, perimeter play Iz'ft
Celts over Tennessee 8 5 -6 7

By Jay G. Tate
Spam I‘IIIIIIII'

KNOXVILLE. Tenn. 7; It’s all
fun and games until someone shoots
the lights out.

And once L'K got into its offen-
sive rhythm scoring on It) straight
possessions mid— —way through the
first half the game had become all
htit a fleeting memory.

As a result. UK whipped the foul-
pla tied Volunteers easily Saturday
nig t, 85-67.

Tennessee remained close
through the first eight minutes of
the game with a consistent effort
from power forward (1.]. Black and
former University Heights center
Isiah Victor, who cotnhined to score
nine of the Vols' first 17 points.

()n the strength ofits inside effort
and a pair of three-pointers from

tiards Brandon \Vharton and Tony

Iarris, UT leaped in front of the
(Iats at 17-16. just seven minutes
into the first half.

But what started as an unusual
, a

--tm ~~> w»

catalyst Michael Bradley free
throw —» ctialesccd itito a stinging
L K scoring rtin that put the game
otit of reach.

\fter Bradley's free- throw \llen
Edwards hit a lay —up followed by
one hy \\ayne Turner lhen Jeff
Sheppard hit a three-pointer .

Then Padgett tipped a missed
shot from Sheppard in for two.

Then Padgett hit a three-pointer.

Then Edwards hit two free
throws.
.-\nd so on. L'ntil the score

reached io-l7.

In the process, Tennessee had lost
hoth its lead and its frontcourt.
which had picked up costly fotils
while trying to stunt the L'K rtin.
Though the (Iats' offense was effi-
cient, the UK defense forced the
Vols into a myriad ofassorted forced
shots and turnovers which grinded
the Tennessee offense to an uncere-
tnonious halt.

“()n the run. I thought we
hneklcd down and picked up the
defensive intensity,” L'K head coach

‘

... «us -. -~‘

Ttihliy Smith said.

“l thought they played aliout as
(high a level on haskethall as I‘ve
seen since I‘ve been coaching." said
L"T head coach Jerry (ireen. a l4-
year coaching veter ran. “They went
on a rip and looked really. really
good They pass the hall so well and
when they have an open man. they
find him."

Those men on Saturday night
were Padgett. who scored a team—
high 20 points. and Sheppard. who
connected on (i—of-‘I from the field
and tied a career-high for three
pointers with five.

Afterward however Sheppard
shunned suggestions that his effec-
tiveness was related to anything out
ofthc ordinary.

“Shots were there and they were
falling —— it wasn't anything we tried
to do," Sheppard said. “It's not like
we were scoring hecause (Smith)
wanted us to score more. \Ve‘ve
been trying to score every game."

Though it was Sheppard hitting
the shots outside. it was point ard
Turner finding the open men. Trim-
er finished with a career-high ll
assists and netted 17 points —~ man '
of which were earned off the (failed)
L'T press.

“\Vhen I see pressure. I think.

q

. -_... We“..- .- W om .a

‘lay-up on the other end.m Turner
said. “That's what we got tonight 7
.1 lot of easy haskets in transition.
That really wants to make \‘()ll work

hard on defense to force those
turnovers."
Tennessee finished with l;

turnovers. led by the Vols' hackcourt
which surrendered l() turnovers to
just three assists.

Btit it was LTK’s turnover tally
which raised more concern.

“Twenty-one turnovers? Too
many, Smith said.
“l‘m really trotihled hy that.

“eye hecn working on that and I'm
not seeing the kind of improvement
I’d like."

Despite a marginal hall handling
performance, L'K found the going
easy once L'T‘s frontcourt found the
bench.

Early scores from L'K post play—
ers Nazr Mohammed, Jamaal
Magloire. Padgett and lleshimu
Evans forced UT’s front line to do
what it took to eventually slow the
Big Blue hlitz.

It took fouls. Lots of fotils.

Both Black and Victor, the \Vols'
only inside scoring threats. notched

third—personal fouls mid-way
through the first half.

working on his si\th album (due

in iior motion picture .ind has
enthused the nation about a new
generation of tall music.

llis ctiiiipt'ehensivc repertoire
and open—minded musical vision
skew the lines deiiiarking all sub-
,.' ‘1 genres of tall. l’rom hop and
swing to free ia/I. (larter does it
all without missing a beat.

llis five albums demonstrate
this point as thoroughly as his
portrayal of lien \\'ebster in
Robert Altman's WW) film Klimt“
City demmtStrated bis versatility
as an entertainer. But recorded
ia/I always places a distant second
'bt hind live performance and
iniprm isation. and Friday’s show
proved that. Though (larter has
i! : pt rformed to eager audiences
extensively throughout the United
States. and has perennially toured
:l‘airope. it is hard to believe any of
.those shows cotild have been het-
fter than the electrifying perfor—
mance in Memorial Hall.

lht‘ Detroit native obviously
had something special when he

rose to national attention in the
late '80s as a l7—year-old prodigy.
Less than a decade later. (Iarter is
still iust beginning what will some
day no doubt be a jaw. legacy.
(Iritics' comparisons of (larter to
John (loltrane and Charlie Parker
are indeed flattering. btit it‘s easy
to see that he has his own voice on
the say and is withotit question a
gifted artist.

Having played alongside Lev—
ington‘s Resident Ja/I Artist
Richard Davis in October.
Carter's soulful. inspired soloing
and musicianship were no
strangers to L'K. Despite (:arter's
brilliance. his hands perfect sup!
port was what ignited Friday’s
show. Pianist (Iraig ’l‘aborn could
easily lead his own band with his
fluttering. frenzied ivory tickling.
.Iaribu Sliahid (electric bass) and
'l‘ani 'l‘abbal (drums) along with
'l'aborn comprised perhaps one of
the tightest. most synchroni/ed
rhythm cores in modern jazz.

(Zarter‘s cool stage presence
and unique high-register squeak
solos were outdone only by his
unvoiced breathy key-tapping
technique. Above all was his abili-
ty to play so many notes in differ-
ent registers ant tiinbres so fast
that at times he sounded like a sat
trio playing canon-like call and
response.

In (Iarter's words. he “brought
the flavor" to Memorial Hall in a
big way.

Spotlightjazz‘s final concert of
this season will feature bassist
Christian McBride April I l at
Memorial Hall. 'l‘ickets are avail-
able at the Student (Zenter Ticket
