MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY FACULTY, JANUARY 11, 1965

Resolution on the Death of John Bond Wells, Jr. (Continued)

Dr. Wells served the University of Kentucky, the College of
Arts and Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy
in an extremely generous fashion. He was director of the lower
division program in mathematics and director of an in—service
institute for secondary school teachers of mathematics. Last
summer, Dr. Wells made a preposal to the National Science Foundation
for funds to conduct a summer institute for secondary school teachers
of mathematics for 1965. This past week the University was notified
that the funds are granted for the institute. He was corresponding
secretary for Pi Mu Epsilon, a mathematics honorary society, and
past international librarian for Mu Alpha Theta, a mathematics
honorary society for secondary schools and junior colleges.

He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, serving valiantly as
chairman of the elections committee for several years. He was a
member of various professional societies and fraternities: The
American Mathematical Society, The Mathematical Association of
America, the International Congress of Mathematicians, Sigma Xi,
Sigma Pi Sigma, Phi Delta Kappa and the Kentucky Academy of Science.
He was secretary of the Arts and Sciences faculty for the past three
years.

Dr. Wells was a member of the Porter Memorial Baptist Church
where he had been a church school teacher for the past four years.

Dr. Wells served as coordinator of advising in the Department
of Mathematics. In addition to this, he served as adviser to a
large number of students each semester. Dr. Wells was always
patient, kind and understanding with his students and advisees.
Their problems became his problems. One thing that frustrated him
more than anything else was being unable to work out difficulties
that arose in connection with his advisees.

Due to his interest in teaching, Dr. Wells had very close
contact with teaching assistants in the Department. He Spent a
considerable amount of time helping these beginning teachers pre—
pare to face the realities of the teaching profession.

In addition to performing these manifold duties, Dr. Wells
found time to help his colleagues in their research. Dr. Wells
was a very capable statistician. He was always willing to help
those colleagues whose training in statistics was not sufficient
for their tasks. He collaborated with several colleagues in re—
search that required statistical analysis. He also had helped the
Department in several research projects.

To those who knew him as a friend, he was jolly, congenial
and personable. To those who knew him as a teacher, he was stimu—
lating, extremely helpful and always kind. The sentiments of those
who knew him as a colleague can best be expressed by the words of
a recent colleague who also knew him as a graduate student. The
colleague writes:

Professor John Bond Wells was a perfect gentleman,
completely honest in his dealings with his colleagues,

MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY FACULTY, JANUARY ll, 1965

Resolution on the Death of John Bond Wells, Jr. (continued)

and utterly devoted to serve the University of Kentucky to
the best of his ability. In the many years I was at the
University of Kentucky, I do not recall ever hearing him
say a mean thing about anyone. He was pleasant, affable,
industrious and, in every way, a credit to the Department
of Mathematics. I am certain that his departure will be
felt by every member of the Mathematics Department and I
want to assure you that I share the sense of loss that must I
be present in the hearts of his many friends.

« raxuh flJ—v“. —\

Dr. Wells assumed a large administrative load in the Department of
Mathematics and Astronomy. Moreover, he completed many tasks without the
knowledge of the other members of the staff. Only after his passing were
his many duties in the smooth Operation of the Department realized. This
is a prime example of his modesty.

The members of the faculty have lost a friend for whom they had
affection. The University has lost an able, devoted associate who put
the University first in all of his efforts. In recognition of our loss,
I move that this document be made a matter of record in the Minutes of
the Faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences; that a copy be sent to
the widow and to the Board of Trustees.
