- Biography / History
- Isham Railey (1846-1907) was born in Versailles, Kentucky to Randolph Railey (1794-1873) and Mary Stuart Hunter (1817-1884). He worked as a farmer and a grain dealer. In 1869, he married Emma "Ezza" Sanders (1847-1920) and together they had seven children: Margaret (1870-1950), Morton (1871-1951), Mary (b. 1873), Sue (1875-1959), Louise (1877-1954), Edith (1879-1915), and Laurance (1884-1948).
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. His most recent books include A Visit with Harlan Hubbard; High Upon a Hill: A History of Bellarmine College; A Song in Native Pastures: Randy Atcher's Life in Country Music; and Waters of Life from Conecuh Ridge.
- Scope and Content
- The Isham Railey travel diary (dated 1914-1915; 0.06 cubic feet; 1 folder) comprises one diary that documents the train travel taken by Isham Railey from Kentucky to California in the early twentieth century. In the diary, Railey recounts his train trip from Kentucky to California, stops made along the way, the weather, and the conditions on the train. Once in California, his entries describe the weather, friends he visits and stays with, traveling around Los Angeles, receiving and sending mail, daily activities, finding an apartment to move in to, attending social events, and his personal health.
- The Isham Railey travel diary collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
