Collection Overview
- Biography / History
- "In 1910, Kentucky formed an Extension Service and joined other states in urging Congress to create a nationwide system to extend education from the land grant colleges to the people of the states. In 1914, Congress responded to this need and enacted the Smith-Lever Act, providing for a comprehensive Extension education program in each state. The language of the original act called for Extension to:"
- ". . . aid in diffusing among the people of the United States useful and practical information on subjects related to agriculture and home economics, and to encourage the application of the same."
- "A key provision of the Smith-Lever Act provided continued strength and stability by a cooperative partnership between three levels of government--federal, state, and county. The Commonwealth of Kentucky officially joined this three-way partnership when, in 1916, the Kentucky General Assembly enacted legislation (KRS-164.110) providing: All Acts of the General Assembly giving assent to Acts of Congress providing aid for ... Agricultural Extension and experiment station work, shall, unless heretofore repealed, remain in force and apply to the University of Kentucky..."
- The Henry County Extension Service was established in 1925 when Carl Malone was hired as the first County Extension Agent.

- Scope and Content
- The University of Kentucky. Henry County Cooperative Extension Service home economics/family and consumer sciences publication and subject files (dated 1940-2007, undated; 5.35 cubic feet; 5 record storage cartons and 1 document box) primarily comprise University of Kentucky extension publications; other university extension, government, and state, and national publications; and Henry County extension agents notes and lesson plans in selected subjects within home economics/family and consumer sciences dated between 1940 and 2007. Publications, notes and lesson plans were filed within a federally-mandated extension filing system that paired a broad subject category with a number. Extension offices were issued with the file dividers pre-labeled with the number and category name. The specific subjects used by the agents in the Henry County Extension Office were clothing (number 4); family life (number 12); nutrition (number 14); home furnishings (number 18); home management (number 19); and housing (human) (number 21). The home economics/family and consumer sciences agents that used and expanded this subject filing system were Geraldine Bentley (1962-1964), Katie Sue Brumagen Yount (1964-1970), Eloise J. McKitrick (1971-1973), Jerdene "Jerri" Cockrel (1973-1985), and Maryellen Garrison (1986-2018). Also includes the curriculum binder for a state-wide extension program that was part of the national Food and Nutrition Program (FNEP), 1979-1984.
